Houston Astros at Los Angeles Angels
ANAHEIM, Calif. (Interstat) — The Houston Astros and Los Angeles Angels will conclude a quick two-game set Tuesday night at Angel Stadium, with both teams looking to climb out of the bottom of the American League West standings.
Houston (30-37) will start right-handers Kai-Wei Teng and Walbert Ureña in what appears to be a bullpen or tandem outing. Both pitchers are 3-4 this season. Teng has a 4.91 ERA over 12 appearances, while Ureña has a 5.12 mark. The Angels (25-41) had not announced a probable starter as of late Monday.
The Astros are coming off a 5-0 loss to the Athletics on Sunday, their second shutout in three games. Houston managed only three hits and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. The Astros have lost nine of their past 13 games.
One bright spot for Houston has been reliever Nate Pearson. The right-hander has not allowed an earned run in five of his past six appearances, including two scoreless innings against on Sunday. Pearson has struck out nine batters over his last 7 2/3 innings.
The Angels are riding high after a 13-5 rout of the Dodgers on Sunday at Dodger Stadium. Catcher Sebastián Rivero went 5 for 5 with six RBIs, a breakout performance for the 27-year-old who entered the game batting .214. Rivero had gone 1-for-18 over his previous seven games before the outburst.
Los Angeles has won four of its past six games, averaging 8.5 runs in those victories.
The teams played Monday night, with the game scoreless after nine innings. That series finale was postponed until later in the season.
The head-to-head series has been tight. The Astros won two of three at home March 28-29, with Houston outscoring the Angels 20-16 in those two victories. Los Angeles won the first two games of that opening-weekend set, including back-to-back shutouts March 26-27.
Tuesday’s game is the first of a two-game stop in Anaheim before Houston travels to Kansas City for a weekend series. The Angels will host Tampa Bay after this set.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 Houston victory.
