Yankees edge Guardians 7‑5 in 10 innings at Progressive Field
CLEVELAND (Interstat) — Paul Goldschmidt’s three-run home run in the first inning gave the New York Yankees an early cushion, but the Cleveland Guardians battled back twice before the Yankees broke a tie in the 10th inning to secure a 7-5 victory Monday night at Progressive Field.
The win, which took 3 hours, 41 minutes in front of 29,517 fans, lifted the Yankees to 39-26 on the season, while the Guardians fell to 37-31. New York took the opener of a four-game series that began a day after the teams split a three-game set in New York earlier in the week.
Goldschmidt’s eighth home run of the season came with one out in the top of the first inning after Ben Rice drew a walk. Goldschmidt drove a 1-0 pitch from Guardians starter Gavin Williams over the left-field wall, scoring Rice and himself for a 2-0 lead. The Yankees added a run in the third inning when Trent Grisham singled, moved to second on a Rice single and scored on a fielder’s choice groundout by Cody Bellinger, aided by a throwing error from shortstop Brayan Rocchio.
Cleveland answered in the bottom of the third. Steven Kwan walked, Patrick Bailey doubled to put runners at second and third, and Rocchio’s groundout brought home Kwan. After a groundout, Jose Ramirez singled and Chase DeLauter singled to load the bases. Kyle Manzardo reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Ramirez, and a fielding error by shortstop Jose Caballero allowed DeLauter to reach third and Manzardo to second. Daniel Schneemann lined out to end the inning with the Guardians within 4-3.
The Yankees regained a two-run lead in the fifth when Ryan McMahon led off with his seventh home run, a solo shot to left-center field that was upheld after a video review. The Guardians countered in the sixth. David Fry led off with a walk, and Angel Martinez followed with his 10th home run, a two-run blast to right-center field that tied the game at 5-5.
The game remained tied through the seventh and into the eighth. In the top of the eighth, Grisham singled and Rice singled to put runners at the corners. Goldschmidt grounded into a forceout, but Grisham scored to give the Yankees a 6-5 lead. Bellinger then singled, but Jazz Chisholm grounded into a double play to end the inning.
The Guardians had a chance in the bottom of the eighth when Bailey singled and Rocchio singled, putting runners at first and second with one out. But Travis Bazzana popped out to third baseman Caballero, and Ramirez flied out to right fielder Spencer Jones to end the threat.
Neither team scored in the ninth, sending the game to extra innings. In the top of the 10th, with automatic runner Ali Sanchez on second base, Guardians reliever Shawn Armstrong intentionally walked Rice to face Max Schuemann. Schuemann, who had entered the game as a pinch-runner, worked a walk to load the bases after a successful challenge on a called strike. Bellinger then delivered the decisive blow, a ground-ball single to left field that scored Sanchez and Rice. Schuemann attempted to advance to third but was thrown out by left fielder Kwan on a relay, limiting the damage to two runs.
The Yankees’ bullpen held the 7-5 lead in the bottom of the 10th. David Bednar, who had entered the game in the eighth inning, recorded the final three outs after a leadoff walk to Martinez. Kwan lined out to shortstop Anthony Volpe, Bailey struck out looking and Rocchio grounded out to second base to end the game.
Bednar earned the win, improving to 2-3 on the season. He pitched two innings, allowing one hit and one walk with one strikeout. Armstrong took the loss, falling to 1-1.
For the Yankees, Goldschmidt finished 1-for-4 with three RBIs. Rice went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Bellinger drove in two runs while going 2-for-5. McMahon homered in his only official at-bat. On the defensive side, infielder Jose Caballero made a throwing error in the third inning that contributed to the Guardians’ rally, and shortstop Anthony Volpe entered the game in the seventh inning.
For the Guardians, Angel Martinez homered and drove in three runs. Bailey had two hits, including a double, and Rocchio singled twice. Starter Gavin Williams went five innings, allowing four runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts. The Guardians’ bullpen combined to allow three runs over the final five innings.
The game featured a total of 16 hits, with the Yankees collecting nine and the Guardians seven. Both teams used their benches and bullpens extensively, with the Yankees deploying seven pitchers and the Guardians four.
The matchup marked the fourth meeting between the two clubs in a week. The Guardians had taken two of three at Yankee Stadium from June 2-4, winning 9-4 and 5-4 before dropping a 2-1 decision on June 4.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 5-4 final score in favor of New York, and the Yankees were installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 12 went under the over-under line of 7.5. Interstat’s ELO system gave New York a 54.40 percent probability to win.
The series continues Tuesday night at Progressive Field, with the Yankees scheduled to face the Guardians again before traveling to Toronto for a three-game series beginning Friday. Cleveland will host the Detroit Tigers following the conclusion of this four-game set.
