Mets Shut Out Padres 5‑0 Behind Christian Scott
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Christian Scott pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings and Luis Torrens drove in two runs with a home run and a double as the New York Mets shut out the San Diego Padres 5-0 on Friday night at PETCO Park before 42,159 fans.
Scott, who improved to 2-0, allowed three hits, walked two and struck out three. He retired the side in order in the first, third and fifth innings and worked out of a threat in the sixth. The right-hander was lifted after throwing 53 strikes among 91 pitches, with 19 balls put into play.
The Mets, who won for the fourth time in five games, improved to 28-35. The Padres dropped to 32-30 after their fourth consecutive loss.
New York broke a scoreless deadlock in the second inning when Jared Young led off with a home run to right-center field, his third of the season. Young finished 2 for 4 with the solo shot and an RBI single in the fourth.
The Mets added a run in the third. Torrens led off with a double to left and moved to third on a fly ball by Carson Benge. Bo Bichette then tripled to right, scoring Torrens. Bichette went 2 for 4 with a triple, a double and an RBI.
New York extended its lead to 4-0 in the fifth. Brett Baty singled with one out, and Torrens followed by launching a two-run homer to center field, his first of the year. Torrens finished 2 for 3 with the home run and double.
The Mets tacked on an insurance run in the ninth. A.J. Ewing singled with one out, stole third and scored on a single by Baty. Baty was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Ewing stole his sixth base of the season.
San Diego’s only scoring threats came in the first, second and sixth innings. In the first, Fernando Tatis Jr. singled but was erased on a double play groundout by Manny Machado. In the second, Ty France singled but was left stranded. In the sixth, Rodolfo Durán walked and Machado singled, but Scott struck out France to end the inning.
The Padres managed only three hits total: singles by Tatis, France and Machado. No San Diego runner advanced past third base.
Michael King took the loss for San Diego, falling to 4-5. He pitched six innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs while striking out four and walking none. King threw 12 strikes among 55 pitches, with 12 balls put into play.
Huascar Brazobán pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief for New York, allowing no hits and striking out two. A.J. Minter pitched a perfect seventh, Luke Weaver a perfect eighth, and David Morgan pitched two scoreless innings for San Diego, allowing one hit and striking out two.
The game lasted 2 hours, 26 minutes.
New York’s previous game was a 7-1 victory at Seattle on Wednesday. The Mets’ upcoming schedule includes the second game of this series Saturday at San Diego, followed by a three-game home series against St. Louis starting Tuesday.
San Diego lost 6-4 at Philadelphia on Thursday. The Padres will host the Mets again Saturday and Sunday before welcoming Cincinnati for three games starting Monday.
The most important sequence of the game occurred in the fifth inning. With the Mets leading 2-0, Baty singled to center field. Torrens then hit a 1-2 pitch from King over the center-field wall, stretching the lead to 4-0. That two-run blast removed any doubt about the outcome, as the Padres had shown little ability to generate offense against Scott and the Mets bullpen. Torrens’ homer followed his earlier double and gave New York a cushion that proved insurmountable.
Scott’s performance was the cornerstone of the victory. He had earned a win in his previous start, May 30 against Miami, when he pitched five innings and allowed one earned run. In his start before that, May 24 at Miami, he took a no-decision in a loss after throwing 5 2/3 scoreless innings.
The Padres’ offensive struggles continued a recent trend. They had scored three or fewer runs in seven of their previous eight games entering Friday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of New York 4, San Diego 2. Interstat’s ELO system gave San Diego a 58.10 percent probability to win, and the Padres were installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5 runs. The total score of 5 runs went over the over-under line of 7.5.
