Baltimore Orioles at Toronto Blue Jays
TORONTO (Interstat) — The Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays meet Friday at Rogers Centre with both teams looking to gain traction in the American League East.
First pitch is set for 7:07 p.m. The Orioles enter at 30-33, one game ahead of the Blue Jays (29-33) in the division standings.
Baltimore arrives in Toronto on a high after an 8-2 win Thursday at Boston. Left-hander Trevor Rogers earned the victory, allowing one earned run over 5 2/3 innings with three strikeouts. It was a welcome bounce-back for Rogers (4-6, 5.28 ERA), who had lost his previous four starts, including a 5-6 defeat against the Blue Jays on May 29 in which he surrendered four runs in six innings.
Rogers will start Friday on full rest. He is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in two career starts against Toronto.
Toronto counters with an offense led by outfielder Nathan Lukes. He has hit safely in seven of his last eight games, batting .400 (12-for-30) during that stretch. Lukes homered Wednesday at Atlanta in a 3-7 loss and is 8-for-22 (.364) against Baltimore this season.
The Blue Jays dropped two of three to the Braves and have lost four of their past six overall.
The division rivals are meeting for the second time in eight days after splitting a four-game set last weekend at Camden Yards. Toronto took the first two games, 6-5 and 2-1, before Baltimore rallied to win the final two, 6-5 and 9-5. The Orioles have outscored the Blue Jays 21-18 in the season series.
The Interstat game simulator projects a 7-4 Baltimore victory, though the ELO rating system gives Toronto a 58 percent chance to win.
After Friday’s opener, the teams play Saturday and Sunday to conclude the series. Baltimore then returns home for a six-game homestand against Seattle and San Diego. Toronto hosts Philadelphia for three games before a six-game road trip to Boston and New York.
