Seattle Mariners at Detroit Tigers
DETROIT (Interstat) — The Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers open a three-game series Friday night at Comerica Park, where first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. with temperatures around 84 degrees and cloudy skies.
Seattle (33-30) sends right-hander Bryan Woo (5-3, 3.68 ERA) to the mound. Woo has been a steady presence in the Mariners rotation, posting quality starts in four of his last six outings. Detroit (25-38) counters with right-hander Troy Melton, who has been sharp in his recent starts, including an eight-inning gem Wednesday against Tampa Bay in which he allowed two earned runs on four hits while striking out five.
The Mariners enter the game looking to rebound from a 7-1 loss Wednesday to the New York Mets at T-Mobile Park. Shortstop J.P. Crawford went 3-for-4 with a home run and an RBI in that defeat and has been one of Seattle’s most consistent hitters. Over his last 10 games, Crawford is batting .333 with three home runs and seven RBIs, including a 2-for-4, two-homer performance May 29 against Arizona.
Detroit is coming off a 7-2 win Wednesday at Tampa Bay, a game in which Melton dominated and Dillon Dingler drove in four runs with a homer and two hits. The Tigers have won three of their last four overall, though they remain in the bottom tier of the American League standings. Melton has been a bright spot, posting a 1.80 ERA over his last three starts spanning 20 2/3 innings.
Seattle has been installed as a 1.5-run favorite, according to Interstat’s game simulator, which projects a 7-3 Mariners victory. The over/under is 7.5 total runs. Seattle’s offense has been productive on the road, averaging 5.2 runs per game away from home. Crawford will be a key figure at the top of the order; in addition to his power surge, he has reached base safely in eight of his last nine contests.
The Mariners and Tigers will continue the series Saturday at 4:10 p.m. and Sunday at 1:10 p.m. before Seattle heads to Baltimore for four games against the Orioles. Detroit will host Minnesota for three games beginning Tuesday.
Both clubs are eager to build momentum. Seattle sits three games above .500 and remains in the thick of the AL West race, while Detroit — despite its record — has shown signs of life behind Melton and a young core seeking to close the gap in the AL Central.
