Athletics at Chicago Cubs

CHICAGO (Interstat) — Left-hander Shota Imanaga (4-6) will take the mound for the Athletics on Thursday afternoon against the Chicago Cubs and right-hander Jameson Taillon at Wrigley Field.

First pitch is set for 2:20 p.m. EDT in the series finale. The Cubs (32-29) hold a one-game edge over the Athletics (29-31) in the standings but enter the game after splitting the first two contests of this interleague set. Chicago won the opener 3-2 on Wednesday, while answered with a 2-1 victory Tuesday night.

The Athletics will look to build on that win behind Imanaga, who has struggled to a 4-6 record this season. The Cubs counter with Taillon, who has endured an inconsistent campaign but was sharp in his last start against on Tuesday, taking a hard-luck loss despite allowing only two earned runs over 6 1/3 innings with six strikeouts.

A player to watch for is left-hander Gage Jump. He is 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in two career appearances against the Cubs, including a win Tuesday when he held Chicago to one earned run over seven innings, scattering three hits and striking out five.

For the Cubs, Taillon aims to reverse a recent trend. Over his last five starts, he is 1-4 with a 7.04 ERA, though he has pitched well in two of those outings — his six-inning, two-run performance Tuesday and a May 10 start at Texas in which he allowed one earned run over 5 1/3 innings.

Chicago has been installed as a -1.5 run favorite, and the over/under is set at 11 runs. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-3 Cubs victory.

After Thursday’s game, the Athletics head to Houston for a three-game series against the Astros starting Friday. The Cubs return home Friday to open a three-game set with the San Francisco Giants.
