Ohtani Dominates as Dodgers Shut Out Diamondbacks 7‑0
PHOENIX (Interstat) — Shohei Ohtani threw seven shutout innings and the Los Angeles Dodgers pounded out 16 hits Wednesday night, routing the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-0 at Chase Field to even the three-game series.
Ohtani (6-2) allowed only two hits and struck out seven over seven innings, walking two and lowering his ERA to 2.87. He also went 3 for 4 at the plate with a walk, driving in no runs but scoring once. The right-hander retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced, yielding only a sixth-inning single to Geraldo Perdomo after Gabriel Moreno’s double in the fourth.
Zac Gallen (3-5) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on nine hits in five innings, striking out one and walking two. The Dodgers broke the game open with a three-run third inning, then added two more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
The Dodgers improved to 40-22, while the Diamondbacks fell to 32-29. Attendance was 36,213, and the game lasted 3 hours, 4 minutes.
The decisive sequence came in the top of the second, when a throwing error by shortstop Geraldo Perdomo allowed Mookie Betts to reach with one out. Kyle Tucker followed by launching a 1-1 fastball from Gallen over the right-center field wall for a two-run homer, his fifth of the season, giving the Dodgers an early 2-0 lead.
Los Angeles extended its advantage in the third. Ohtani walked to lead off the inning and scored on Andy Pages’ double to right field. Freddie Freeman then singled to left, driving in both Ohtani and Pages to make it 4-0. After Mookie Betts struck out, Kyle Tucker singled, and Max Muncy lined a sharp single to center, scoring Freeman for a 5-0 lead. The inning ended when Will Smith grounded into a double play.
The Dodgers’ offense continued to produce against the Arizona bullpen. In the seventh, Max Muncy doubled with one out off reliever Ryan Thompson, and Will Smith walked. Alex Call was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Alex Freeland singled to center, scoring Muncy and Smith for a 7-0 lead.
Arizona’s only threats came in the fourth, when Moreno doubled to right with two outs, and in the sixth, when Tommy Troy walked and Perdomo singled, but the Diamondbacks could not convert either rally. Corbin Carroll grounded into a double play to end the sixth. The Diamondbacks finished with only two hits — a double by Moreno and a single by Perdomo — and struck out eight times.
Ohtani, who also pitched seven innings in his previous start, allowed just the two hits and did not walk a batter after the second inning. He threw 96 pitches, 63 strikes. Jonathan Hernández pitched a perfect eighth inning, and J.P. Feyereisen worked a scoreless ninth, though an error by third baseman Santiago Espinal allowed Moreno to reach with two outs before Nolan Arenado flied out to end the game.
Key performances for the Diamondbacks included catcher Gabriel Moreno, who went 1 for 4 with a double. Shortstop Geraldo Perdomo was 1 for 4. Left fielder Tommy Troy went 0 for 2 with a walk and a strikeout. Center fielder Ryan Waldschmidt was 0 for 3 with a strikeout. Second baseman Ildemaro Vargas went 0 for 3. First baseman Jose Fernandez went 0 for 2 with a walk and a strikeout. Designated hitter Pavin Smith was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts. Pitcher Jonathan Loáisiga threw one-third of an inning, allowing no hits and striking out one. Pitcher Ryan Thompson allowed three hits over 1 2/3 innings, striking out two.
The Dodgers’ win followed a 6-5 loss Tuesday night that had snapped a five-game winning streak. They had taken Monday’s series opener 4-1 and entered the series having won 12 of their previous 15 games. The victory moved Los Angeles to 5-2 against Arizona this season, including a three-game sweep at Dodger Stadium in March.
Arizona had won four of its previous five games before Wednesday’s loss. The Diamondbacks are now 10-10 in June after a 16-13 May.
The Dodgers’ offense was relentless, with eight of nine starters collecting at least one hit. Freeman went 3 for 5 with two RBIs. Tucker was 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs. Muncy was 2 for 5 with a double, an RBI and a run. Freeland was 3 for 5 with two RBIs. Ohtani also had three hits, including two singles and a walk, and scored once. Pages doubled and walked but did not drive in a run. Smith walked twice and singled. Call reached twice on a hit-by-pitch and a single.
The Dodgers will look to win the series Thursday afternoon at Chase Field, with right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto (5-2, 2.91) scheduled to face Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery (4-4, 4.26). The Dodgers then return home for a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels, while the Diamondbacks host the Washington Nationals for three games.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected the Diamondbacks to win 6-5, while its ELO system gave the Dodgers a 60.10% probability of victory. The Dodgers were installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -1.5, and the total of seven runs went over the over/under line of 8.5.
