Sánchez extends scoreless streak, Phillies edge Padres 3‑2
PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — Cristopher Sánchez pitched seven strong innings and J.T. Realmuto and Kyle Schwarber hit consecutive home runs in the seventh inning as the Philadelphia Phillies edged the San Diego Padres 3-2 on Wednesday night at Citizens Bank Park.
Sánchez allowed one earned run on four hits with eight strikeouts over seven innings to improve to 7-2. The left-hander retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced and did not allow a hit until Manny Machado singled with one out in the fourth. Sánchez also benefited from a defense that turned two double plays behind him.
Walker Buehler matched Sánchez inning for inning through six, allowing one run on four hits with six strikeouts. But the Padres bullpen could not hold a tie game in the seventh, as Jason Adam took the loss after giving up two runs on two hits, including both homers.
The Phillies struck first in the bottom of the fifth. Bryson Stott led off with a double to right field, moved to third on a flyout by Realmuto and scored on an RBI double by Adolis García. That gave Philadelphia a 1-0 lead.
San Diego tied the game in the top of the seventh. Ty France doubled to left field with one out and scored on a single by Jackson Merrill. Merrill’s hit was the Padres’ fourth of the game and chased Sánchez after 91 pitches. Brad Keller relieved and got Jase Bowen to line out to end the inning.
The game turned on a pair of solo shots in the bottom of the seventh. Realmuto led off with his third home run of the season, a fly ball to left-center field off Adam. After two strikeouts, Schwarber followed with his 23rd homer, a fly ball to right-center, giving the Phillies a 3-1 lead.
San Diego rallied in the eighth. Fernando Tatis Jr. singled and Miguel Andujar followed with a single to put runners at first and third. After Machado struck out, Gavin Sheets walked to load the bases. Keller then hit Xander Bogaerts with a pitch, forcing in Tatis to cut the deficit to 3-2. But Keller got France to ground into a forceout to end the threat.
Jhoan Duran worked a perfect ninth inning, striking out two, to earn his 14th save. He retired Bryce Johnson and Samad Taylor to close the game.
The attendance was 40,453, and the game lasted 2 hours, 15 minutes.
Sánchez continued a strong stretch against San Diego. He also beat the Padres on May 27, throwing seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts. Over his last two starts against them, he has allowed one earned run in 14 innings with 17 strikeouts. His previous start came against Cleveland on May 22, when he took a hard-luck loss despite allowing one unearned run in eight innings.
For the Padres, Ty France had two hits, including a double. Buehler’s outing was the second consecutive solid start by a San Diego pitcher against Philadelphia. The teams split the first two games of the series, with the Phillies winning Tuesday’s opener 3-2.
Wandy Peralta pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for San Diego, allowing one hit and striking out none.
The Phillies improved to 32-29, while the Padres fell to 32-28.
Philadelphia’s offense managed eight hits, with Schwarber, Realmuto, Stott, García, Brandon Marsh and Alec Bohm each contributing. The Phillies also received a key performance from Stott, who doubled and later scored.
San Diego had six hits, including two from France and one each from Machado, Merrill, Tatis and Andujar.
The series concludes Thursday afternoon. Philadelphia then hosts the Chicago White Sox for a weekend set, while San Diego returns home to face the New York Mets.
The game was the fourth meeting between the teams this season, with Philadelphia taking three of the first four. The Phillies swept a three-game series in San Diego from May 25-27, then won the first game of this series Tuesday.
San Diego’s upcoming schedule includes a weekend series against the Mets, followed by a homestand against Cincinnati and a road trip to Baltimore.
Philadelphia will travel to Toronto for a three-game series next week, then visit Milwaukee.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Philadelphia 4, San Diego 3. Interstat’s ELO system gave Philadelphia a 54.70 percent probability to win. The Phillies were installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total score of five runs went over the over/under line of seven.
