Orioles edge Red Sox behind Baz’s dominant start
BOSTON (Interstat) — Shane Baz pitched seven strong innings and Pete Alonso homered to lead the Baltimore Orioles to a 4-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night at Fenway Park.
Baz allowed four hits and two earned runs while striking out six to improve to 3-5 on the season. He walked one and threw 97 pitches in his second consecutive quality start. Rico Garcia worked a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to earn his fourth save.
Alonso went 2 for 4 with a two-run home run in the third inning that broke the game open. Coby Mayo added a solo home run in the second inning, his seventh of the year. Blaze Alexander drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
The Orioles improved to 29-32 with the win, while the Red Sox dropped to 25-34.
Baltimore struck first in the top of the second inning when Mayo’s fly ball to left-center field was originally ruled a double but overturned on replay review, giving the Orioles a 1-0 lead. Mayo’s homer came off Boston starter Connelly Early, who lasted 5 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on six hits while striking out six.
The Orioles extended their lead in the third inning. Adley Rutschman singled with one out and Alonso followed by driving a 1-2 pitch from Early deep to left field for his 12th home run of the season, scoring Rutschman and making it 3-0.
Baltimore added another run in the fourth. Tyler O’Neill led off with a single, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Leody Taveras, and scored on Alexander’s sacrifice fly to right field.
Boston had taken an early lead in the first inning but could not build on it. Jarren Duran led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on Wilyer Abreu’s sacrifice fly to center. The Red Sox added their second run in the fifth inning when Mickey Gasper singled, advanced to third on a fly out by Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and scored on Marcelo Mayer’s sacrifice fly to center.
The Red Sox threatened in the eighth inning when Ceddanne Rafaela singled off Andrew Kittredge, but Kittredge induced a groundout from Abreu to end the inning. Garcia then retired the side in order in the ninth, striking out Willson Contreras and Masataka Yoshida before Mickey Gasper flied out to right to end the game.
Early took the loss, falling to 5-3 on the season. He allowed six hits and struck out six but was hurt by the two home runs. Greg Weissert pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts for Boston. Tyler Samaniego worked two scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out two.
Caleb Durbin provided the only extra-base hit for Boston with a double in the fifth inning. Duran had a triple in the first. Rafaela had two singles.
Baltimore’s offense produced nine hits overall. In addition to Alonso’s multi-hit game, Rutschman and O’Neill each had a single, and Alexander had a single. Taveras added a bunt single in the ninth inning. The Orioles also drew two walks.
Boston managed only five hits total. Gasper had a single to go with Duran’s triple, Rafaela’s two singles, and Durbin’s double. The Red Sox struck out nine times, including six by Baz.
The game took 2 hours, 34 minutes and was played in front of 35,004 fans at Fenway Park.
Baltimore had won four of its previous six games coming into the night, including a 6-5 win over Toronto on Sunday. Boston had won two of its last three, including a 9-4 win at Cleveland on Sunday.
The Orioles and Red Sox continue their three-game series Wednesday night at Fenway Park. Baltimore then travels to Toronto for a weekend series, while Boston heads to New York for a weekend set against the Yankees.
Baz’s outing was his second straight start of at least seven innings. In his previous start on May 26 against Tampa Bay, he worked seven innings and allowed one run while striking out nine in a win.
Alonso’s home run was his 12th of the season and third in his last five games. Mayo’s homer was his seventh.
The Orioles’ bullpen combined for two scoreless innings. Kittredge allowed one hit in the eighth but got out of the inning without damage. Garcia closed the door in the ninth.
Boston’s bullpen also threw well. Weissert did not allow a hit in 1 2/3 innings and struck out three. Samaniego allowed three hits over two scoreless frames but the Red Sox offense could not mount a rally.
The loss dropped Boston to 11 games under .500 for the season. The Red Sox have lost three of their last four home games.
Baltimore improved to 3-1 against Boston this season after losing the previous two meetings at Camden Yards in April. The Red Sox had taken two of three from the Orioles in Baltimore from April 24-26.
The Orioles’ next 10 games include three more against Boston, three at Toronto, and then four home games against Seattle. The Red Sox’s next 10 include the final two against Baltimore, three at New York, three at Tampa Bay, and then two home games against Texas.
