Mariners Edge Mets 3‑2 in 10 Innings on Walk-Off Single

SEATTLE (Interstat) — Cole Young’s soft line-drive single to left field in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Randy Arozarena and lifted the Seattle Mariners to a 3-2 victory over the New York Mets on Monday night at T-Mobile Park.

The walk-off hit capped a pitchers’ duel that featured solo home runs from both sides and a combination of strong starting pitching and scoreless relief work before Seattle broke through in extra innings. The Mariners improved to 32-29, while the Mets fell to 26-34.

Seattle took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Colt Emerson hit a solo home run to right field, his third of the season. The Mets answered in the fifth when Jared Young led off with a solo homer to center field, his second. Marcus Semien put New York ahead 2-1 in the sixth with a solo shot to left, his sixth.

The Mariners tied the game in the seventh. Josh Naylor hit a solo homer to right, his sixth, off Mets reliever Luke Weaver. The score remained 2-2 through the ninth as both bullpens delivered scoreless innings.

In the top of the 10th, Mets hitters Juan Soto, Mark Vientos and A.J. Ewing went down in order against Mariners reliever Gabe Speier, who struck out two.

In the bottom of the 10th, Mets reliever A.J. Minter faced Seattle’s Patrick Wisdom, who struck out swinging. During the at-bat, Arozarena stole third base, his 17th steal of the season. Young then lined a soft single to left, easily scoring Arozarena and ending the game.

Seattle starter Emerson Hancock worked six innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out seven. He departed after the sixth with the game tied 2-2. Hancock came into the game with consecutive wins, including a six-inning, one-hit shutout of the Athletics on May 26 and a five-inning, five-hit outing against the Chicago White Sox on May 20.

Mets starter Sean Manaea also pitched five innings, giving up one run on one hit — Emerson’s solo homer — and striking out four.

The bullpens kept the game tight. For the Mets, Weaver tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings, Devin Williams threw a scoreless frame with two strikeouts, and Austin Warren added a scoreless inning. For Seattle, Jose A. Ferrer, Andres Munoz, Matt Brash and Speier combined for four scoreless innings, allowing only a hit batter.

The winning pitcher was Speier, who improved to 1-2. Minter took the loss, falling to 0-1.

Both teams were limited at the plate. The Mets managed only two hits — the solo homers by Young and Semien. Seattle had four hits, including the solo homers by Emerson and Naylor, Young’s walk-off single, and a single by Cole Young earlier in the game.

The Mets threatened in the eighth when MJ Melendez was hit by a pitch, but Brett Baty grounded into a double play. In the ninth, the Mets went down in order.

Seattle also had a chance in the ninth when Julio Rodriguez struck out, Victor Robles grounded out and Arozarena struck out.

The game lasted 2 hours, 33 minutes, with an announced attendance of 23,037.
