Mariners edge Diamondbacks in 10 innings at T-Mobile Park
SEATTLE (Interstat) — The Seattle Mariners capped a three-game weekend sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 3-2, 10-inning victory Sunday evening at T-Mobile Park.
Seattle improved to 31-29, while Arizona dropped to 31-27 in front of 41,897 fans. The game took 2 hours, 57 minutes.
Arizona opened the scoring in the sixth inning. Ketel Marte drew a walk, and Corbin Carroll doubled to put runners at second and third. Geraldo Perdomo’s fielder’s choice erased Marte at the plate, but Carroll moved to third. Nolan Arenado struck out to end the inning with no runs scoring initially. However, the Diamondbacks broke through in the eighth. Gabriel Moreno singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt that first baseman Josh Naylor misplayed for an error. Marte’s sacrifice fly to left scored Moreno, tying the game after Arizona had taken a brief lead.
Seattle had grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run by Cole Young, his fourth of the season. The Mariners tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Dominic Canzone homered to right, his seventh, knotting the score at 2-2. Both bullpens held firm through the ninth, forcing extra innings.
In the top of the 10th, Arizona put a runner on third with one out after a sacrifice bunt moved Ildemaro Vargas to third. But Luis Castillo induced a groundout and a strikeout to escape. In the bottom half, Seattle’s Victor Robles delivered the decisive hit. With the bases loaded after an intentional walk and a sacrifice bunt, Robles singled to shortstop, scoring pinch-runner Randy Arozarena for the walk-off win.
Bryce Miller was the top star for Seattle. He threw five shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out six. Castillo earned the win in relief, working five innings and allowing one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts. He improved to 2-5 on the season.
For Arizona, Merrill Kelly started and went 5 1/3 innings, surrendering two earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Juan Morillo delivered two scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts. Jonathan Loáisiga took the loss, falling to 1-2 after allowing the winning run in the 10th.
Both teams had limited offensive production. Arizona managed only three hits and used two sacrifice bunts. Seattle collected 11 hits, including Canzone’s homer and Young’s homer, both driving in a run. Robles was 1 for 1 with the walk-off RBI.
Arizona had won two of three at San Francisco earlier in the week but lost the first two games of this series, falling 5-1 on Saturday and 7-6 on Friday. Seattle entered on a high after taking two of three at and completed the sweep at home.
The Diamondbacks will host the Los Angeles Dodgers beginning Monday, June 1, while the Mariners host the New York Mets.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Arizona 8, Seattle 5. Interstat’s ELO system gave Seattle a 54.40 percent probability to win. Seattle was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total score of 5 went over the over/under line of 7.5.
