Tigers fall 2‑1 to White Sox in pitchers’ duel

CHICAGO (Interstat) — Colson Montgomery’s seventh-inning home run erased a one-run deficit and Tristan Peters delivered a tiebreaking single as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field.

The White Sox improved to 32-27, winning for the third straight game in the three-game series and completing a sweep. The Tigers fell to 22-38.

Detroit took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With one out, Kevin McGonigle singled off White Sox starter Sean Burke. Spencer Torkelson followed with a double to left field, scoring McGonigle. Burke then struck out Kerry Carpenter and got Riley Greene to fly out, limiting the damage.

Both starting pitchers dominated from there. Detroit’s Keider Montero allowed only two hits over six scoreless innings, striking out four and walking none. The Tigers’ right-hander retired the first 10 batters he faced and faced only one baserunner – a single by Rikuu Nishida in the third inning – until the fifth, when Peters doubled but was stranded.

Burke matched Montero’s effectiveness. The White Sox left-hander allowed three hits and one run over 5 1/3 innings, striking out six. He walked two and exited after a one-out walk to Matt Vierling in the sixth.

The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh inning, when the White Sox rallied against Detroit reliever Drew Anderson. Montgomery led off with a home run to right-center field, his 15th of the season, tying the game. Chase Meidroth followed with a single, and Jacob Gonzalez singled to put runners at first and second. Peters then singled to left field, scoring Meidroth and giving Chicago a 2-1 lead.

The White Sox attempted to extend the inning, but after Drew Romo flew out, Peters was caught stealing second base to end the threat.

Detroit mounted a brief threat in the eighth. With one out, Torkelson singled off reliever Chris Murphy, but Jahmai Jones flied out to end the inning. The Tigers went down in order in the ninth against Tyler Davis, who earned his first save of the season.

Brandon Eisert, who faced one batter in the seventh, got the win, his first. Anderson took the loss, dropping to 2-3.

Key performances included Montero’s six shutout innings, during which he scattered two hits and struck out four. Burke allowed one run on three hits over 5 1/3 innings with six strikeouts. White Sox relievers Chris Murphy, Bryan Hudson and Tyler Davis combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out one. Davis pitched 0 2/3 innings for the save. Hudson worked 1 1/3 innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout. For Detroit, Brenan Hanifee pitched a scoreless inning and Tyler Holton retired the only batter he faced.

The White Sox racked up six hits, led by Peters, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Montgomery went 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. The Tigers managed four hits, including doubles by Torkelson and a single by Carpenter.

The game lasted 2 hours, 20 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 28,764.

Detroit has now lost four straight games and seven of its last 10. The Tigers begin a three-game road series Monday at Tampa Bay. The White Sox, winners of four of their last five, travel to Minnesota for a three-game set starting Monday.

In the series sweep, Chicago outscored Detroit 13-5. The White Sox won 7-1 on Saturday and 4-3 on Friday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Chicago White Sox 5, Detroit Tigers 2. Interstat’s ELO system gave the White Sox a 52.30 percent probability to win. Chicago was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 3 went under the over-under line of 8.
