San Diego Padres at Washington Nationals

WASHINGTON (Interstat) — The San Diego Padres and Washington Nationals conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon at Nationals Park, with first pitch scheduled under cloudy skies and a temperature of 71 degrees.

Right-hander Zack Littell (4-4) is scheduled to start for San Diego (32-25), while Washington (30-29) counters with right-hander Foster Griffin, who has won his last three decisions. Littell has struggled recently, allowing four earned runs over six innings in his last outing.

The Nationals took the series opener 9-4 on Saturday, powered by Griffin’s solid start: 5.0 innings, five hits, three earned runs and five strikeouts. Washington also got production from relievers Brad Lord and Clayton Beeter, who combined for 3.1 scoreless innings. San Diego third baseman Manny Machado went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs in the loss, continuing a productive series. Over the first two games, Machado is 3 for 8 with two homers and three RBIs.

San Diego won the first game of the series 7-5 on Friday. The Padres have lost four of their last six overall, while Washington has won three of four.

Left-hander Michael King started Saturday for San Diego, allowing four earned runs over six innings. Xander Bogaerts homered in the loss. The Padres are 1.5 games ahead of the Nationals in the wild-card chase.

Washington’s Foster Griffin is a key player to watch. In his last five starts, he has allowed two earned runs or fewer three times, including a shutout performance against Atlanta on May 24 (6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER). He struggled May 14 against Cincinnati, allowing nine earned runs in 4.1 innings.

San Diego has been installed as a 1.5-run favorite, with the over/under set at 9. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-4 Washington victory.

Following Sunday’s game, the Padres travel to Philadelphia for a three-game series starting Tuesday, while the Nationals host Miami for a three-game set beginning Monday.
