Phillies rally past Dodgers 4‑3 on Sosa’s two-run homer
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Edmundo Sosa’s pinch-hit two-run home run in the eighth inning capped a three-run rally Saturday, lifting the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.
The Phillies, who had dropped the series opener a day earlier, improved to 30-28. The Dodgers, with the best record in the National League, fell to 37-21 but still hold a 6½-game lead in the NL West.
Orion Kerkering earned the win, improving to 3-0, with a scoreless inning of relief. Jhoan Duran notched his 12th save, retiring the final three batters in the ninth. Tanner Scott took the loss for the Dodgers, his record falling to 1-2.
Philadelphia trailed 3-1 entering the eighth inning after the Dodgers had scratched out single runs in the second, fourth and seventh. But the Phillies’ offense, held to three hits through seven innings by Roki Sasaki and three relievers, broke through against Scott.
Justin Crawford led off the top of the eighth with a ground-ball single to left field off Scott. Kyle Schwarber grounded out to second base, advancing Crawford to second. Trea Turner flied out to right, leaving Crawford at second with two outs. Bryce Harper then delivered a sharp line-drive single to right field, scoring Crawford and cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Sosa, batting for Brandon Marsh, followed by driving Scott’s first pitch over the left-center-field wall for his third home run of the season, giving the Phillies a 4-3 lead. It was Sosa’s second hit of the game in two at-bats, and the home run accounted for two of his three RBIs on the day.
The Dodgers threatened in the bottom of the seventh, but the Phillies escaped further damage. After Shohei Ohtani struck out swinging, Andy Pages doubled to left field. Freddie Freeman struck out, but Mookie Betts singled to right field, scoring Pages to tie the game at 2-2. A challenge by the Phillies on a tag play at the plate was upheld. Kyle Tucker grounded out to end the inning, leaving Betts stranded.
The Phillies had taken an early lead in the second inning when Alec Bohm led off with a solo home run to center field, his sixth of the season, off Sasaki. The Dodgers answered in the bottom of the second against Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo.
Will Smith singled, Miguel Rojas walked, and Alex Call singled to center field, scoring Smith to tie the game at 1. A forceout at third base and a strikeout of Ohtani ended the threat with the score 1-1.
Los Angeles took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Alex Call doubled to right field and advanced to third on a fielding error by right fielder Adolis García. Santiago Espinal followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Call. Ohtani then singled but was left on base.
The starting pitchers each worked into the sixth inning. Luzardo allowed seven hits and two earned runs over 5⅓ innings, walking one and striking out six. Sasaki was similarly effective, yielding three hits and one earned run over 5⅓ innings, striking out seven and walking two. Neither figured in the decision.
Bohm finished 1 for 4 with the home run and an RBI. Betts led the Dodgers with three hits in four at-bats, driving in a run and scoring once.
Blake Treinen, Kyle Hurt and Alex Vesia each threw a scoreless inning of relief for the Dodgers before Scott entered. José Alvarado recorded two outs in the seventh for the Phillies, and Kerkering worked the eighth before handing off to Duran.
The Phillies and Dodgers conclude the three-game series Sunday. Philadelphia returns home to face the San Diego Padres on Tuesday, while Los Angeles travels to Arizona to open a four-game set Monday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Los Angeles Dodgers 7, Philadelphia Phillies 6. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Dodgers a 63.20 percent probability to win. Los Angeles was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5 runs. The total score of 7 went over the over-under line of 8.5.
