Red Sox pound Guardians 9‑1 behind Gray’s strong start
CLEVELAND (Interstat) — Sonny Gray pitched six innings of one-run ball and Boston’s offense exploded for six runs in the ninth inning as the Red Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians 9-1 on Saturday afternoon at Progressive Field.
Gray (6-1) allowed four hits, struck out seven and walked none, rebounding from a rough outing five days earlier. Jarren Duran capped the ninth-inning outburst with a three-run homer, his ninth of the season. Connor Wong drove in three runs with a double and a single. Caleb Durbin added a sacrifice fly and an RBI double.
Boston trailed 1-0 after the first when Jose Ramirez doubled in Travis Bazzana, but the Red Sox tied it in the fourth on Durbin’s sac fly, took the lead in the sixth on Wong’s double and added a run in the eighth. The six-run ninth broke the game open.
The Guardians got six hits but managed only the first-inning run. Matt Festa (1-1) took the loss. Attendance was 35,740. The game lasted 2 hours, 52 minutes. Boston improved to 24-33, Cleveland fell to 34-26.
