J.P. Crawford’s two homers lift Mariners past Diamondbacks in 10
SEATTLE (Interstat) — A walk-off double by Randy Arozarena in the 10th inning lifted the Seattle Mariners to a 7-6 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night at T-Mobile Park, snapping a four-game losing streak and handing the Diamondbacks a tough defeat in the opener of a three-game series.
The Mariners, now 29-29, trailed 6-5 entering the bottom of the sixth but tied the game on a solo home run by Luke Raley. The game remained deadlocked until the bottom of the 10th, when Arizona reliever Juan Morillo, after striking out Julio Rodríguez to open the inning, intentionally walked Josh Naylor. J.P. Crawford, the automatic runner at second base, advanced to third on the walk, then scored on Arozarena’s sharp line drive to center field. Naylor stopped at third, but the damage was done.
Arozarena’s double was his 16th of the season and capped a night in which Seattle’s offense collected 13 hits, matching the Diamondbacks’ total. The game, which lasted 3 hours, 10 minutes, was played before a crowd of 44,198.
Arizona struck first in the top of the fourth when shortstop Geraldo Perdomo, who finished 3-for-6 with a home run and an RBI, launched a solo shot to right field off Seattle starter Emerson Hancock. That gave the Diamondbacks a 4-3 lead after Seattle had taken a 3-2 advantage in the bottom of the third on a two-run homer by Rodríguez.
Seattle’s J.P. Crawford had opened the scoring in the first inning with his eighth home run of the year, a solo blast to right. The Mariners added two more in the third when Rodríguez homered again, his 11th, driving in Crawford who had walked earlier. Rodríguez finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a double.
Arizona’s offense responded in the top of the sixth with a four-run outburst. Trailing 5-3, the Diamondbacks loaded the bases on singles by Corbin Carroll and Perdomo, and a double by Gabriel Moreno that scored Carroll and Perdomo to tie the game at 5-5. After a walk to Adrian Del Castillo, Ryan Waldschmidt singled to reload the bases. Ildemaro Vargas grounded into a forceout that brought home Moreno, and Jose Fernandez followed with an RBI single to score Del Castillo, giving Arizona a 6-5 lead. The rally ended when Ketel Marte struck out with the bases loaded.
Seattle’s Raley tied the game again in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run, his 12th, off Arizona reliever Brandon Pfaadt. Pfaadt, who entered with two outs in the fifth, allowed three hits and one earned run over 1 2/3 innings, striking out three.
Both teams had opportunities in the later innings. Arizona loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth on a single by Perdomo, a single by Moreno, and a hit by pitch to pinch-hitter Nolan Arenado. But Vargas grounded into a fielder’s choice that forced out Perdomo at the plate, and after a popout and another forceout, the Diamondbacks left the bases loaded.
Seattle also threatened in the bottom of the ninth, putting the automatic runner Patrick Wisdom on second and moving him to third on a groundout, but Arizona closer Jonathan Loáisiga struck out Colt Emerson and got Crawford to ground out to end the inning. Loáisiga threw a scoreless inning with one strikeout.
The Diamondbacks had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on Perdomo’s homer, but Seattle answered in the bottom half with a single by Arozarena and a single by Raley, though a double play ended the threat. Arizona scored its first run in the fourth after Perdomo’s solo shot, making it 4-3 at that point.
Arizona’s 13 hits included a double by Fernandez, who went 2-for-5 with an RBI, and a 3-for-6 performance from Perdomo that included a double and a home run. Moreno added two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Carroll singled twice. Waldschmidt had one hit and a walk. Arenado, pinch-hitting, singled in his only at-bat.
Seattle’s 13 hits were paced by Rodríguez’s two hits, including the homer and a double. Crawford also homered and walked, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Raley homered and singled, and Arozarena finished 2-for-4 with the game-winning double. Naylor singled, Cole Young singled, and Jhonny Pereda had a hit.
The game featured two double plays turned by Arizona, one in the first inning on a line-drive double play started by Ketel Marte and Perdomo, and another in the fourth inning on a ground-ball double play by Perdomo and Vargas. Seattle did not turn a double play.
Arizona’s record fell to 31-25. The Diamondbacks entered the game having won three straight at San Francisco earlier in the week, but they now trail the Dodgers by four games in the National League West. Seattle’s record evened at 29-29, and the Mariners have won two of their last three.
The winning pitcher was Cooper Criswell, who improved to 2-1. Criswell worked a scoreless top of the 10th, allowing one hit and striking out one. The losing pitcher was Juan Morillo, who dropped to 1-2. Morillo pitched one-third of an inning, allowing one hit and no earned runs while striking out one, but the intentional walk and the subsequent double cost him the game.
In the top of the 10th, Arizona’s Tommy Troy, who started the inning as the automatic runner at second base, advanced to third on a groundout by Marte, but Corbin Carroll grounded out sharply and Perdomo grounded out to end the threat.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Arizona 8, Seattle 5. Interstat’s ELO system had given Seattle a 53.90 percent probability to win. Seattle had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total score of 13 went under the over-under line of 7.
