Blue Jays edge Orioles 2‑1 on Piñango’s walk

BALTIMORE (Interstat) — Yohendrick Piñango drew a bases-loaded walk from Anthony Nunez in the eighth inning to lift the Toronto Blue Jays to a 2-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

The Blue Jays improved to 28-29 while the Orioles fell to 26-31 in front of 13,778 spectators in a game that lasted 2 hours, 43 minutes.

Toronto grabbed the lead in the third inning when shortstop Andrés Giménez hit his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center field off Baltimore starter. The Orioles answered in the fourth when third baseman Coby Mayo led off with his sixth homer, a solo drive to center field that tied the score at 1.

The game remained deadlocked until the eighth. Toronto designated hitter George Springer led off with a double off the center-field wall. Nathan Lukes sacrificed Springer to third with a bunt. After an intentional walk to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Nunez, the Baltimore reliever, walked Daulton Varsho to load the bases. Piñango then pinch-hit for catcher Brandon Valenzuela and worked a full-count walk, forcing in Springer with the go-ahead run. Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman challenged the result of a pitch during the at-bat, but the call was confirmed after review.

Toronto’s Jeff Hoffman earned the win, pitching a scoreless eighth inning with one hit allowed and two strikeouts. Hoffman improved to 4-3. Louis Varland retired the final four batters to earn his eighth save. Varland pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and no earned runs. Nunez took the loss, falling to 2-2.

The Blue Jays managed only six hits but made them count. Toronto’s first hit of the game came in the opening inning as Lukes singled, but the Blue Jays stranded him. Giménez went 1-for-4 with a home run and an RBI, accounting for half of Toronto’s run production.

Baltimore outhit Toronto 8-6 but could not push across another run after Mayo’s homer. The Orioles put runners in scoring position in the fifth when Blaze Alexander hit a ground-rule double and Taylor Ward walked, but Gunnar Henderson lined out to first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to end the threat.

In the sixth, the Orioles again threatened when Rutschman singled off Toronto starter Patrick Corbin, but Pete Alonso struck out and Samuel Basallo grounded into a double play.

Baltimore’s best chance to tie or take the lead came in the eighth. After Hoffman took over, the Orioles put two runners on when Taylor Ward singled and Rutschman reached on a force out. An overturned call at first base on a grounder by Alonso put runners at first and second, but catcher Brandon Valenzuela picked off Alonso at first base to end the inning.

Varland set the Orioles down in order in the ninth, striking out Colton Cowser and inducing a groundout from Jackson Holliday to seal the win.

Toronto’s previous game was a 2-1 victory Wednesday over the Miami Marlins at home. The Blue Jays are now 3-2 on their current road trip.

Baltimore came into the game having won three straight, including an 11-2 trouncing of the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday.

The two teams continue the series Friday night. Toronto then travels to Atlanta for a three-game set starting Tuesday, while Baltimore heads to Boston for a three-game series beginning Tuesday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Toronto Blue Jays 6, Baltimore Orioles 5. Interstat’s ELO system gave Toronto a 53.90 percent probability to win. Baltimore had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 3 went over the over-under line of 8.5.
