Mariners Rout Athletics Behind Gilbert, Early Power
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — Rob Refsnyder’s three-run homer in the first inning ignited the Seattle Mariners to a 9–1 victory over the Athletics on Wednesday afternoon at Sutter Health Park, completing a three‑game series sweep.
Refsnyder’s blast came after a costly error by Athletics second baseman Jeff McNeil extended the inning. J.P. Crawford had led off the game with a single off Athletics starter Jeffrey Springs. After Julio Rodríguez and Randy Arozarena lined out, Josh Naylor reached on McNeil’s throwing error, putting Crawford at third and Naylor at second. Refsnyder then drove a 2‑1 pitch to left field for his third homer of the season, scoring Crawford, Naylor and himself to give Seattle a 3–0 lead.
The Mariners never looked back. Logan Gilbert, the Seattle right‑hander, held the Athletics scoreless through six innings, scattering five hits while striking out six. Gilbert improved to 3‑4 on the season, allowing only a pair of walks and inducing two double plays in the contest.
Seattle added two runs in the fourth inning. Cole Young singled and Jhonny Pereda walked before rookie Colt Emerson lined a triple to right field, scoring both runners. Emerson’s first career triple made it 5–0. The Mariners extended the lead to 6–0 in the sixth on a fielder’s choice that brought home Young, who had singled and moved to second on a walk to Pereda.
The decisive blow came in the eighth inning. Young walked again, Pereda popped out, and Emerson singled to put runners at first and second. Crawford struck out, but Julio Rodríguez launched a 1‑0 pitch to left‑center field for his 10th homer of the season, a three‑run shot that gave Seattle a 9–0 cushion.
The Athletics avoided the shutout in the bottom of the ninth. Jonah Heim walked and Henry Bolte singled, putting runners at the corners. McNeil grounded into a double play, but Heim scored on the play, trimming the deficit to 9–1. Zack Gelof singled later in the inning, but Darell Hernaiz grounded out to end the game.
Springs took the loss, falling to 3‑6. He worked five innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out seven. The Athletics’ bullpen combined for four innings of relief, with José Suarez throwing a scoreless seventh and Joel Kuhnel allowing one run in the eighth.
For Seattle, the offense collected 13 hits. Crawford finished with three hits, while Emerson contributed two hits, including the triple and a single. Rodríguez added two hits and three RBIs. Young reached base three times with two singles and a walk, scoring three runs.
For the Athletics, Hernaiz and Gelof each had two hits in four at‑bats. Carlos Cortes singled and walked, Tyler Soderstrom doubled, and Shea Langeliers and Bolte each singled. McNeil went 0‑for‑4 and was charged with the throwing error that opened the door for Seattle’s first‑inning outburst.
The game was played in 2 hours, 40 minutes before an announced crowd of 9,612 at the temporary home of the Athletics, Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento.
The sweep continued a strong stretch for Seattle, which has now won four of its last five games and improved to 28–29 on the season. The Athletics dropped to 27–29 after losing three straight to the Mariners. The teams had split a four‑game series in Seattle in April, but the Mariners have taken the last three meetings.
Seattle’s early offensive success was critical, as the Mariners had struggled to score in support of Gilbert in recent starts. Gilbert had received two or fewer runs of support in four of his previous five outings. On Wednesday, the Mariners gave him a three‑run lead before he even took the mound.
The Athletics threatened only once against Gilbert, in the fifth inning. Gelof led off with a double, but Hernaiz lined out and Cortes walked before Nick Kurtz flied out to end the inning. In the sixth, Soderstrom doubled with one out, but Heim struck out and Bolte grounded out.
Seattle’s defense turned two double plays, including one in the ninth to limit the Athletics to a single run. The Mariners also got strong work from their bullpen: Eduard Bazardo pitched a perfect seventh inning, and the combination of relievers held the Athletics to one run over three innings of relief.
The Mariners will return home to host the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday. The Athletics remain in West Sacramento to begin a three‑game series against the New York Yankees.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Athletics 5, Seattle Mariners 3. Interstat’s ELO system gave Seattle a 53.40 percent probability to win. Seattle had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus‑1.5. The total of 10 runs went under the over/under line of 9.
