White Sox Rout Twins 15‑2 Behind Sandlin, Meidroth

CHICAGO (Interstat) — The Chicago White Sox erupted for five runs in both the fifth and seventh innings Wednesday night, overwhelming the Minnesota Twins 15-2 at Guaranteed Rate Field to take a two-games-to-one lead in the four-game series.

Chase Meidroth delivered the decisive blow with a seventh-inning grand slam, and Munetaka Murakami followed with a solo home run as the White Sox pounded out 18 hits. David Sandlin earned his first win of the season, allowing two runs on three hits over seven innings while striking out seven. Connor Prielipp took the loss, his third against one win, after surrendering eight runs on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The Twins struck first in the opening inning. Byron Buxton led off the game with his 17th home run, a line drive to center field, putting Minnesota up 1-0. The Twins mustered only two more hits the rest of the night — a solo homer by Kody Clemens in the eighth and a double from Luke Keaschall.

Chicago answered in the second. After Colson Montgomery singled and Edgar Quero singled, Sam Antonacci grounded a single through the middle with the bases loaded, scoring Montgomery and Quero to tie the game. Antonacci’s single gave the White Sox a 2-1 lead after two.

In the third, Miguel Vargas walked and moved to third on a single by Randal Grichuk. Colson Montgomery doubled to center, scoring Vargas and extending the lead to 3-1. Prielipp escaped further damage by getting Edgar Quero to ground out and striking out Derek Hill.

The game remained 3-1 until the fifth, when the White Sox broke it open. Prielipp began the inning by walking Murakami. Miguel Vargas singled, and Randal Grichuk singled to score Murakami, making it 4-1. After a flyout, Edgar Quero lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Vargas. Pinch-hitter Tristan Peters then singled, and Sam Antonacci lined a two-run single to right, scoring Grichuk and Peters. Luisangel Acuña followed with an RBI single, and the inning ended with the White Sox ahead 8-1.

Minnesota scratched across its second run in the eighth when Kody Clemens hit his fifth home run, a solo shot to right-center. But by then the game was out of reach.

The White Sox put the game away in the seventh, when they sent 10 batters to the plate. With one out, Edgar Quero singled, Tristan Peters walked and Sam Antonacci singled to load the bases. Luisangel Acuña struck out, but Meidroth crushed the first pitch he saw over the center-field fence for his fifth home run, a grand slam that made it 13-2. Murakami then followed with his 20th homer of the season, a solo shot to left-center, pushing the lead to 14-2.

The decisive sequence highlighted an offensive explosion that included contributions from throughout the lineup. Meidroth, who started at second base and later moved to third, had a double and a triple in addition to his grand slam. Peters, in a pinch-hit role before shifting to center field, singled twice and walked. Acuña singled and drove in a run from the shortstop position. Grichuk collected three hits, including a pair of singles, and scored twice. Murakami finished with two hits, a walk and two runs scored. Antonacci had three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs. Quero reached base four times with two singles and two walks.

The Twins managed only three hits total. Buxton’s leadoff homer and Clemens’ solo shot accounted for all of Minnesota’s runs. Keaschall’s double in the eighth was the only other hit. The Twins struck out 11 times and did not draw a walk.

The game’s outcome continued a pattern of high-scoring affairs in the series. The Twins won the opener Tuesday 5-3 in 11 innings, and the White Sox won Monday’s series opener 3-1. The White Sox improved to 28-27, while the Twins fell to 27-29.

Attendance was announced at 14,796. The game lasted 2 hours, 20 minutes.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Minnesota 5, Chicago 4. Minnesota had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total of 17 runs went under the over/under line of 8. The two teams meet again Thursday afternoon in the series finale. After that, the Twins travel to Pittsburgh for a three-game weekend series, while the White Sox host Detroit for three games beginning Friday. The teams will then face each other again June 1-3 in Minnesota.
