Emerson Hancock Leads Mariners Past Athletics 4‑1
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — Emerson Hancock allowed one hit in six scoreless innings, Victor Robles had three hits and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Athletics 4-1 on Tuesday night at Sutter Health Park.
Hancock, who struck out three and walked two, improved to 4-2 and notched his seventh quality start of the season. He faced the minimum through three innings and did not allow a baserunner until Brent Rooker drew a one-out walk in the fifth. Hancock then surrendered a single to Tyler Soderstrom but stranded both runners when Jeff McNeil lined out and Zack Gelof popped out.
The Mariners broke the game open in the second inning with three runs on four hits. Josh Naylor led off with a single, Rob Refsnyder followed with a single and Mitch Garver drove in the first run with a ground-rule double to left field. Cole Young then lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Refsnyder. Victor Robles added a single to put runners at the corners, and after a walk to Colt Emerson, J.P. Crawford brought Garver home with another sacrifice fly to right.
Seattle extended its lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning. Robles led off with a double, moved to third on Crawford’s single and scored on Julio Rodríguez’s sharp line-drive single to left. The Mariners had a chance to add more when Randy Arozarena singled to load the bases with no outs, but Josh Naylor grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Athletics starter Gage Jump took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed four runs on nine hits in five innings, striking out five. The Athletics bullpen held Seattle scoreless over the final four innings, with José Suarez pitching 1 2/3 hitless innings and Justin Sterner tossing 1 1/3 perfect frames.
Seattle’s bullpen also was effective. José A. Ferrer worked a scoreless seventh, allowing one hit, and Gabe Speier struck out one in a perfect eighth. Andrés Muñoz took the mound in the ninth and allowed Soderstrom’s solo home run to lead off the inning, his sixth of the season. Muñoz then struck out Alika Williams, gave up a single to Gelof and got Lawrence Butler to ground out to end the game.
The Mariners finished with 11 hits, going 5-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranding eight runners. Naylor and Garver each had two hits. For the Athletics, Soderstrom had two hits, including the home run, and Gelof added a pair of singles.
Seattle improved to 27-29, while the Athletics fell to 27-28. The Mariners have won back-to-back games after losing four of their previous five. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Athletics, who had won five of six entering the night.
The game featured a pivotal second inning that set the tone for Seattle. After Hancock retired the side in order in the first, the Mariners sent eight batters to the plate in the second. Naylor’s leadoff single started the rally, and after Garver’s double gave Seattle a 1-0 lead, the Mariners executed two productive outs with sacrifice flies. Crawford’s second sac fly made it 3-0.
Seattle’s ability to manufacture runs without needing extra-base hits proved critical against Jump, who entered with a 4.50 ERA over three appearances this season. Jump had allowed just one run in his previous start against the Los Angeles Angels on May 19.
Hancock, meanwhile, continued his strong May. In his previous two starts, he had allowed three earned runs over 11 innings with 10 strikeouts. His command was sharp Tuesday, as he threw 64 pitches, 44 for strikes, and induced nine ground-ball outs.
The Mariners missed an opportunity to blow the game open in the fourth when they loaded the bases with no outs. But Jump escaped the jam by getting Naylor to hit into a double play. That kept the Athletics within striking distance, but Seattle’s bullpen shut down any comeback attempt.
Athletics manager Mark Kotsay used five relievers, with the most effective being Suarez, who allowed two hits and struck out one over 1 2/3 innings. Sterner struck out one in his outing.
The loss was the Athletics’ first at home against Seattle this season. The Mariners had lost the previous two meetings in Seattle in April before winning 9-2 on Monday night. The series finale is scheduled for Wednesday.
Seattle next returns home to face the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday, while the Athletics host the New York Yankees starting Friday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Athletics 5, Seattle Mariners 3. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Seattle with a 52.30 percent probability to win. Seattle had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total score of 5 went over the over/under line of 9.
