Philadelphia Phillies at San Diego Padres

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — The Philadelphia Phillies visit the San Diego Padres on Monday night at PETCO Park to open a three-game series, with first pitch scheduled under cloudy skies and 69 degrees.

The Phillies (26-27) send left-hander Jesús Luzardo (3-4) to the mound. The Padres (31-21) counter with right-hander Randy Vásquez (5-2).

Philadelphia dropped Sunday’s series finale 3-1 to Cleveland, managing only six hits while striking out eight times. Andrew Painter took the loss despite a solid start, allowing two earned runs over 6⅓ innings with three strikeouts. Painter remains a key pitcher to watch for the Phillies; over his past five outings he has a 4.50 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 26 innings, though he was roughed up for eight earned runs in 3⅔ innings against on May 7.

San Diego lost 5-2 to the Athletics on Sunday. Reliever Ron Marinaccio, a player to watch for the Padres, turned in three scoreless innings of one-hit relief with two strikeouts. Over his past nine appearances, Marinaccio has allowed two earned runs in 15⅓ innings with 14 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .167 average.

The Padres have won seven of their past 10 games overall, while the Phillies have dropped five of their past six. San Diego has been particularly strong at home, where they are 17-9 this season.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-6 Padres victory, but oddsmakers have installed Philadelphia as a -1.5 favorite on the run line. The over/under is set at 7.5 runs.

Philadelphia will send right-hander Taijuan Walker (4-3, 4.10 ERA) on Tuesday night, while the Padres are expected to counter with left-hander MacKenzie Gore (4-2, 3.55 ERA).
