Dodgers rally past Rockies 5‑3 in four-run seventh inning

LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Emmet Sheehan pitched six strong innings, and the Los Angeles Dodgers scored four runs in the seventh inning to rally past the Colorado Rockies 5-3 on Monday night at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers won their sixth game in seven tries, improving to 34-20, while the Rockies dropped to 20-35 with their fifth loss in six games. Attendance was 48,778, and the game lasted 2 hours, 40 minutes.

Sheehan, a right-hander, allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out eight in his third consecutive quality start. He did not walk a batter. Sheehan was coming off a win at San Diego on May 19 in which he allowed four earned runs over four innings, and a May 14 victory against San Francisco in which he gave up two runs over six innings with six strikeouts.

Kyle Hurt earned the win in relief, his first decision of the season. Blake Treinen recorded the save, his first, by retiring the only batter he faced in the ninth inning.

Brennan Bernardino took the loss for Colorado, falling to 2-3. Bernardino was charged with four runs in the decisive seventh inning.

Colorado starter Tanner Gordon turned in a fine outing, allowing one run on six hits over five innings with three strikeouts. He left with a 2-1 lead, but the bullpen could not hold it.

The Rockies struck first in the fourth inning. Tyler Freeman led off with a ground-rule double down the right-field line. Troy Johnston singled off Sheehan’s glove, sending Freeman to third. Willi Castro then singled to right, scoring Freeman and moving Johnston to third. Ezequiel Tovar followed with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Johnston for a 2-0 lead.

The Dodgers got a run back in the bottom of the third. Hyeseong Kim singled to right field. Enrique Hernández doubled down the left-field line, scoring Kim to cut the lead to 2-1.

Colorado extended its lead to 3-1 in the seventh inning. Tovar led off with a home run to center field, his second of the season. It was the only run charged to Sheehan in his final inning of work.

The Dodgers’ four-run seventh inning turned the game. Will Smith led off with a walk. Hyeseong Kim walked, putting runners on first and second. Miguel Rojas was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Shohei Ohtani then grounded into a forceout on a play reviewed and overturned at first base. Smith scored on the play, Kim moved to third, and Rojas was out at second. Mookie Betts followed with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Kim to tie the game at 3. Freddie Freeman doubled to right field, scoring Ohtani to give the Dodgers a 4-3 lead. Andy Pages singled to center, scoring Freeman to make it 5-3.

Bernardino was lifted after the double by Freeman. Jaden Hill and Welinton Herrera pitched the remainder of the inning without further damage.

Treinen entered in the top of the ninth after Treinen had recorded the final out of the eighth on a strikeout of Braxton Fulford. Treinen got the final out on a strikeout of Fulford, stranding a single by Castro.

The Dodgers outhit the Rockies 8-7. Enrique Hernández went 2 for 2 with an RBI double. Andy Pages was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Tovar led the Rockies with two hits, including the home run, and drove in both of the Rockies’ runs before the seventh.

The Rockies had won three of the four previous meetings this season between the clubs, but the Dodgers took the series opener in this three-game set.

Colorado entered the game having lost four of its previous five, including a 9-1 defeat at Arizona on Sunday. The Dodgers came in having won four of their previous five, including a 5-1 victory at Milwaukee on Sunday.

The Dodgers will host the Rockies again Tuesday night. Colorado will send a starting pitcher to be announced against a Dodgers pitcher to be determined.
