MLB: Marlins at Blue Jays Preview
TORONTO (Interstat) — The Miami Marlins (25-29) open a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays (25-28) at Rogers Centre on Monday at 7:07 p.m. EDT.
Right-hander Trey Yesavage (2-1, 3.12 ERA) is scheduled to start for Miami. Right-hander Dylan Cease (3-2, 3.86 ERA) is the probable pitcher for Toronto.
Miami enters the game having won three straight, including a 4-0 shutout of the New York Mets on Sunday. Heriberto Hernández, who has been a key contributor in the win streak, went 2 for 2 with a home run and four RBIs in that victory. Over his last 10 games, Hernández is batting .333 with two homers and seven RBIs. He will likely serve as the designated hitter or pinch-hitter.
Toronto lost 4-1 to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, snapping a five-game winning streak. Cease, who is the player to watch for the Blue Jays, took the loss in that game, allowing two earned runs over 4 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts. In his previous two starts, Cease pitched seven innings in each, allowing one earned run against Tampa Bay on May 13 and zero earned runs against the Los Angeles Angels on May 8.
The Blue Jays have won four of their last six games at home. Miami is 12-15 on the road this season.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-4 Toronto victory. The Blue Jays are listed as -1.5 favorites on the run line. The over/under is set at 7.5.
Miami will send Janson Junk (2-5) to the mound Tuesday. Toronto has not announced a starter for the second game of the series.
The Marlins’ most productive players Sunday besides Hernández were pitcher Tyler Phillips (3 2/3 innings, two hits, zero earned runs, four strikeouts) and Michael Petersen (1 1/3 innings, zero hits, two strikeouts).
For Toronto, Sunday’s bright spots included relievers Braydon Fisher and Yariel Rodríguez, each pitching a scoreless inning with one strikeout.
Following this series, Miami travels to New York for three games against the Mets beginning Friday. Toronto heads to Baltimore for a four-game series starting Thursday.
