Pirates edge Cubs 2‑1 in pitchers’ duel at PNC Park
PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — Henry Davis delivered a tie-breaking solo home run in the seventh inning, lifting the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Monday afternoon at PNC Park.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Pirates, who improved to 28-26, while the Cubs fell to 29-25 after dropping their sixth consecutive contest.
Pittsburgh right-hander Wilber Dotel earned his first win of the season with three innings of one-hit relief, striking out four. Gregory Soto worked a perfect ninth inning for his sixth save.
Cubs starter Ben Brown turned in a strong performance, allowing one earned run on four hits over six innings while striking out seven, but took a no-decision. Trent Thornton, who relieved Brown in the seventh, was charged with the loss after surrendering Davis’ go-ahead homer.
The game was a pitchers’ duel from the outset. Brown retired the side in order in the first, while Pirates starter Carmen Mlodzinski worked around a two-out single by Pedro Ramírez in the second.
Chicago broke through in the fifth. Michael Busch led off with a solo home run to center field, his sixth of the season, giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead. Alex Bregman followed with a single but was caught stealing second to end the inning.
Pittsburgh had tied the game in the third. After Spencer Horwitz walked, Brandon Lowe doubled to left, driving in Horwitz to make it 1-1. Lowe’s double was his 12th of the year.
The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Davis launched a 1-2 pitch from Thornton over the left-field wall for his fourth homer of the season, putting the Pirates ahead 2-1.
The Cubs threatened in the eighth but could not capitalize. Dotel retired the side in order in the seventh, then worked around a one-out single by Moisés Ballesteros in the eighth. Soto closed it out in the ninth, setting down the Cubs in order on two groundouts and a strikeout.
Pittsburgh outhit Chicago 8-6. Lowe finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Horwitz went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Oneil Cruz also had two hits, going 2-for-4. Brown allowed just one hit through the first five innings before the Pirates’ bats began to find gaps.
The Cubs’ best scoring opportunity beyond the homer came in the second, when they loaded the bases with one out on singles by Ramírez and Ballesteros and a walk to Miguel Amaya. But Dansby Swanson struck out swinging to end the threat.
Pittsburgh’s defense turned a key double play in the second inning. With runners on first and second, Jhostynxon Garcia grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to erase any threat.
The game featured a crisp pace, finishing in 2 hours, 24 minutes before a crowd of 22,174.
The Pirates had lost the first two games of the season series in Chicago earlier this month, falling 7-6 on April 12 after winning 4-3 and 2-0 on April 11 and 10, respectively. The victory Monday evened the season series at two games apiece.
The two teams continue their four-game series Tuesday at PNC Park.
Chicago had entered the game on a five-game skid, having been swept in a three-game set by the Houston Astros over the weekend and losing two of three to the Milwaukee Brewers before that. The Cubs have not won since May 17, when they defeated the Chicago White Sox 8-5.
Pittsburgh, meanwhile, arrived home after splitting a six-game road trip, which included a 4-1 win in Toronto on Sunday.
The game was played as a makeup for a previously postponed contest, originally scheduled for earlier in the season.
Interstat’s game simulator projected a 3-2 final score in favor of the Pirates. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Cubs a 55.40 percent probability to win. Chicago was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of three went over the over-under line of eight.
