Washington Nationals at Cleveland Guardians
CLEVELAND (Interstat) — The Washington Nationals visit the Cleveland Guardians on Monday night at Progressive Field, with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. under a 67-degree forecast and rain.
Washington (26-27) sends right-hander Zack Littell (3-4, 4.91 ERA) to the mound. The Nationals are coming off a 2-0 win Saturday at Atlanta, where right-hander Jake Irvin pitched five shutout innings with seven strikeouts. Irvin has been a bright spot for Washington, posting a 1.80 ERA over his past two starts despite allowing five earned runs in three innings May 13 at Cincinnati.
Cleveland (32-23) counters with right-hander Tanner Bibee (0-6, 5.79 ERA), who is seeking his first win of the season. The Guardians won Sunday at Philadelphia, 3-1, behind left-hander Parker Messick, who threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Messick has been Cleveland’s most consistent starter, winning four of his past five outings with a 1.86 ERA over that span.
The Guardians have won four of their past five games and eight of their past 12. Washington has split its past 10.
Players to watch: Irvin (Washington) and Messick (Cleveland). Irvin’s recent work includes a dominant May 23 outing in which he allowed no hits and no runs over five innings. Messick has allowed two earned runs or fewer in six of his past seven starts.
Betting lines: Cleveland is a -1.5 favorite, with the over/under set at 8. The Interstat game simulator projects a 7-5 Guardians victory.
Monday’s game is the first of a three-game series. Washington returns home Friday to host San Diego, while Cleveland hosts Boston on Friday.
