Angels edge Rangers 2‑1 behind Detmers’ dominant outing
ANAHEIM, Calif. (Interstat) — Reid Detmers struck out 14 over eight innings and the Los Angeles Angels edged the Texas Rangers 2-1 on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at Angel Stadium of Anaheim.
Detmers allowed only one hit and one earned run, a solo home run by Jake Burger in the second inning. The left-hander rebounded from consecutive rough starts — a loss to on May 19 in which he gave up eight earned runs in 5⅔ innings, and a loss at Cleveland on May 13 when he allowed three earned runs in 5⅔ innings. He walked none and threw 103 pitches, 73 for strikes, while lowering his season earned-run average.
The Rangers struck first in the top of the second. Burger, the first baseman, drove a 2-1 fastball from Detmers over the center-field fence for his 10th home run of the season, putting Texas ahead 1-0.
Rangers starter MacKenzie Gore matched Detmers early. Gore worked six innings, allowing one hit and one earned run while striking out seven and walking two. He retired the first seven batters he faced before issuing a two-out walk to Sebastián Rivero in the bottom of the third. Adam Frazier then walked, bringing Mike Trout to the plate. Trout lined a single to right field that scored Rivero, tying the game 1-1. Gore induced a groundout from Vaughn Grissom to end the inning.
Both pitchers settled into a duel after that. Gore set down seven of his final eight batters, and Detmers faced the minimum from the third through the seventh innings, allowing only a two-out single to Alejandro Osuna in the ninth that was erased on a fielder’s choice.
Texas threatened in the top of the ninth against Angels reliever Sam Bachman. With one out, Osuna singled to left. Justin Foscue followed with a single to shortstop, moving Osuna to second. Brandon Nimmo walked to load the bases, but Bachman struck out Burger on a foul tip to end the inning and preserve the tie.
The Angels broke through in the bottom of the ninth against Rangers reliever Gavin Collyer. Vaughn Grissom struck out to start the inning, but Jorge Soler ripped a sharp line-drive single to left. Jo Adell was hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second. Oswald Peraza then grounded to second base. Foscue fielded the ball and attempted to force Adell at second, but his throw sailed wide and into right field, allowing pinch-runner Donovan Walton to score from second base and give the Angels a 2-1 walk-off victory.
Collyer took the loss, falling to 1-1. He allowed one unearned run on one hit with one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning. Bachman earned his first win of the season, striking out two in a scoreless ninth while allowing two hits.
Jakob Junis pitched two scoreless innings of relief for Texas, striking out four and allowing two hits. He kept the game tied through the seventh and eighth innings, striking out the side in the eighth after allowing a two-out single.
Trout finished 1-for-4 with the RBI single. Soler went 1-for-4. No Angels batter had multiple hits. Jose Siri, batting leadoff and playing left field, went 0-for-2 before being replaced. Zach Neto went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
For the Rangers, Burger was 1-for-4 with the home run and the only RBI. Osuna and Foscue each had singles in the ninth. Texas managed only three hits in the game. The Rangers struck out 14 times, with eight of those strikeouts coming against Detmers.
Attendance was announced at 36,903. The game lasted 2 hours, 31 minutes.
Texas dropped to 24-28, while the Angels improved to 20-34. The Rangers, who lost the series two games to one, have lost four of their last five games after opening the road trip with a 5-4 win at Colorado on May 20. The Angels snapped a three-game losing streak and won for just the third time in their last 10 games.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Texas 5, Los Angeles 3. The Angels were installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total of three runs went under the over/under line of eight.
