Perez’s hit leads Royals to 8‑6 Sunday win over Mariners

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Interstat) — Salvador Perez made Seattle pitcher Bryan Woo pay for an intentional walk that loaded the bases ahead of him, delivering a two-out, two-run single in the fifth inning that ignited a four-run rally and propelled the Kansas City Royals to an 8-6 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium.

Perez finished 3 for 4 with three runs batted in, and Carter Jensen and Maikel Garcia each drove in two runs for Kansas City. The Royals won consecutive games for the first time since May 9-10, improving to 22-31. Seattle dropped to 25-29.

The decisive sequence came in the bottom of the fifth inning with the score 1-0 in favor of the Mariners. Michael Massey led off with a walk, and Kyle Isbel bunted for a single that also advanced Massey to third on a throwing error by Woo. After Maikel Garcia grounded out and Bobby Witt Jr. flied out, Woo intentionally walked Vinnie Pasquantino to load the bases for Perez. The veteran catcher lined a sharp ground ball into left field, scoring Massey and Isbel to give Kansas City a 2-1 lead. Jensen followed with a double to center that brought home Pasquantino and Perez, extending the lead to 4-1.

The Royals added a run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Isbel after Isaac Collins had doubled and advanced to third on a bunt. Kansas City led 5-1.

Seattle responded in the seventh. Dominic Canzone doubled and Mitch Garver singled, putting runners at the corners. Colt Emerson, who had a perfect 4-for-4 day with a run batted in, singled to score Canzone. J.P. Crawford then singled to drive in Garver, pulling Seattle within 5-3. But Kansas City answered immediately in the bottom half when Pasquantino doubled and Perez singled to center, pushing the lead back to 6-3.

The Royals padded their advantage in the eighth. With two outs and the bases empty, Jac Caglianone and Isaac Collins drew walks from Seattle reliever Alex Hoppe. After Michael Massey grounded out for the second out, Kyle Isbel struck out, but on the play Collins advanced to second on a passed ball. Garcia then lined a two-run single into left field, scoring pinch-runner Tyler Tolbert and Collins to make it 8-3.

Seattle mounted a final rally in the ninth. Colt Emerson opened with a double off reliever Daniel Lynch IV and moved to third on a groundout. Julio Rodriguez, who had homered in the first inning, singled to score Emerson. Josh Naylor followed with a single, and Randy Arozarena doubled down the left-field line, plating Rodriguez and Naylor to trim the deficit to 8-6. But Lynch retired Luke Raley on a groundout to end the game.

Julio Rodriguez finished 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs. Emerson doubled three times and singled, scoring once and driving in a run. Seth Lugo pitched into the seventh inning, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three, earning his first win since his season debut on March 29. He improved to 2-4. Woo took the loss, falling to 4-3, after allowing four runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings.
