Nationals edge Braves 2‑1 behind Griffin’s strong start

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. (Interstat) — Foster Griffin pitched six innings of three-hit shutout ball and the Washington Nationals defeated the Atlanta Braves 2-1 on Sunday evening at Truist Park.

Griffin (6-2) struck out six and allowed no earned runs, rebounding from a rough outing earlier in the week. Orlando Ribalta earned his second save with two-thirds of a scoreless inning.

Washington scratched out single runs in the fifth and eighth innings. Nasim Nuñez delivered a line-drive single to right field to drive in Daylen Lile in the fifth. Luis García Jr. added an RBI single in the eighth.

Atlanta’s lone run came in the ninth on a fielder’s choice by Eli White that scored Ozzie Albies, aided by a fielding error from second baseman Nuñez.

Martín Pérez (2-3) took the loss, allowing one earned run over 5 2/3 innings with five hits and two strikeouts. Reynaldo López gave up a run in two innings of relief.

The Nationals improved to 27-27. The Braves fell to 36-18 before a crowd of 36,429. Game time was 2:38.
