Marlins beat Mets 4‑1 behind Meyer’s dominant start

MIAMI (Interstat) — Max Meyer pitched seven innings of one-hit shutout ball and Liam Hicks homered twice to lead the Miami Marlins to a 4-1 victory over the New York Mets on Saturday evening at loanDepot Park.

Meyer, who improved to 5-0 on the season, struck out eight and walked none while allowing only a second-inning single to Mark Vientos. He retired 21 of the 23 batters he faced, facing the minimum after a double play erased Vientos. The right-hander threw 86 pitches and did not allow a runner past first base until the seventh inning, when Vientos was hit by a pitch but was stranded.

The Marlins, now 24-29, snapped a two-game losing streak and have won two of three against the Mets in the current series. The Mets fell to 22-30 with their second consecutive loss.

Miami took the lead in the second inning. Jakob Marsee drew a walk and Connor Norby singled to left, with Marsee advancing to third on the play. Owen Caissie then doubled to right field, driving in both runners to give the Marlins a 2-0 lead.

The Marlins extended their lead in the third when Hicks led off with a solo home run to right-center, his 10th of the season, making it 3-0. Otto Lopez followed with a double but was stranded.

Miami added a fourth run in the fifth inning. Hicks delivered again, this time with a solo shot to right field, his 11th homer of the year, putting the Marlins up 4-0.

The Mets broke through in the ninth inning against reliever Andrew Nardi. Tyrone Taylor doubled to left and scored on a single by Mark Vientos. Nardi allowed two hits and one run in two-thirds of an inning before giving way to Anthony Bender, who faced two batters and struck out the final one to end the game. Bender recorded 1.1 innings, allowing no hits and no earned runs with three strikeouts.

Marlins batters collected eight hits, with Hicks going 2 for 4 with two homers and two RBIs. Graham Pauley added a single in three at-bats. Xavier Edwards, Otto Lopez and Joe Mack each singled. Edwards also made a key defensive play in the second inning, starting a double play that erased Vientos after his single.

Mets starter Freddy Peralta took the loss, dropping to 3-4. Peralta allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings, walking two and striking out four. He surrendered both of Hicks’ home runs and the two-run double by Caissie.

The Mets managed only three hits in the game. Vientos had two singles and an RBI. Taylor doubled. Carson Benge, Bo Bichette, Juan Soto, Brett Baty, A.J. Ewing, Marcus Semien, MJ Melendez and Luis Torrens combined for just one hit.

The game lasted 2 hours and 18 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 21,071.

The victory marked Meyer’s fifth straight decision to open the season, the longest such streak by a Marlins pitcher since Sandy Alcantara in 2022. He threw first-pitch strikes to 18 of the 23 batters he faced and induced 12 swings and misses.

Miami struck first in the second after a quiet first inning. Peralta retired the side in order in the first, striking out one. Meyer matched him, striking out Carson Benge and Brett Baty around a walk to Juan Soto.

In the second, Vientos singled but was erased on a double play. The Marlins then put together the game’s decisive rally. Marsee walked, Norby singled and Caissie doubled to left-center, scoring both. Peralta struck out Graham Pauley and got Joe Mack to pop out to end the inning, but the damage was done.

Hicks’ first homer came on a 1-2 fastball that he drove to right-center for a 3-0 lead. Lopez followed with a double but was left at second.

The Mets threatened only once against Meyer, in the seventh, when Vientos was hit by a pitch with two outs. Meyer then struck out A.J. Ewing to end the inning.

Hicks added his second homer in the fifth, a solo shot to right field on a 3-2 pitch, extending the lead to 4-0.

The Mets mounted a small rally in the ninth against Nardi. Taylor doubled to left and scored on Vientos’ single to left. With one out and a runner on first, Bender entered and struck out A.J. Ewing to end the game.

The series continues Sunday afternoon at loanDepot Park before the Mets head home to face the Cincinnati Reds on Monday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of New York Mets 6, Miami Marlins 3, with the Mets installed as a pregame favorite at a spread of minus 1.5. The total score of 5 went over the over/under line of 7.5.
