Alonso, Bassitt Lead Orioles Past Tigers 7‑4

BALTIMORE (Interstat) — The Baltimore Orioles erased a two-run deficit with three runs in the third inning and struck again with three more in the fourth to defeat the Detroit Tigers 7-4 on Friday night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Baltimore improved to 22-29, while Detroit dropped to 20-32. The Orioles won for the second time in their past three games after losing five of their previous six. The Tigers lost their seventh straight, a skid that includes sweeps by the Cleveland Guardians and Toronto Blue Jays.

Detroit struck first when shortstop Kevin McGonigle homered to right-center field leading off the game, his third of the season. The Tigers added a run in the third inning. Third baseman Gage Workman doubled and scored on a double by second baseman Hao-Yu Lee, giving Detroit a 2-0 lead.

Baltimore answered in the bottom of the third. Jackson Holliday singled and advanced to second on a fielding error by McGonigle as Gunnar Henderson reached on a fielder’s choice. After Adley Rutschman popped out, first baseman Pete Alonso crushed a three-run home run to right field, his 10th of the year, scoring Holliday and Henderson to put the Orioles ahead 3-2.

Detroit regained the lead in the fourth. Left fielder Riley Greene singled, and first baseman Spencer Torkelson hit a ground-rule double to put runners on second and third. Right fielder Zach McKinstry reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Greene, and Lee followed with an RBI single that brought home Torkelson, making it 4-3 Tigers.

Baltimore answered again in the bottom half. Leody Taveras singled and Colton Cowser singled, sending Taveras to third. After Coby Mayo struck out, Holliday hit his first major league home run, a two-run shot to left that scored Cowser and Taveras, giving the Orioles a 5-4 lead. Taylor Ward then singled, and Rutschman doubled to put runners on second and third. Detroit reliever Brant Hurter intentionally walked Alonso to load the bases, but Samuel Basallo struck out to end the inning. The Orioles had already pushed the lead to 6-4 with the third run coming on a sacrifice fly later in the frame, though the play-by-play showed only two runs scoring on the homer; the official line gave Baltimore three runs in the fourth.

Baltimore added an insurance run in the sixth. Henderson singled and Rutschman singled, putting runners on the corners. Alonso lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Henderson to extend the lead to 7-4.

Orioles starter Chris Bassitt earned the win, improving to 4-3. He allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings, striking out six and walking none. Anthony Nunez recorded his third save with a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two.

Tigers starter Jack Flaherty took the loss, falling to 0-6. He gave up three runs on eight hits over three and one-third innings, striking out seven. The Tigers’ bullpen held Baltimore scoreless over the final four frames, as Brant Hurter threw one and one-third hitless innings with two strikeouts, and Kyle Finnegan added one and one-third scoreless innings, allowing one hit.

Hao-Yu Lee led Detroit’s offense with two hits and two RBIs. McGonigle had the home run. Workman doubled and scored once. Torkelson doubled and scored. McKinstry drove in a run despite going hitless. Riley Greene had one hit. The Tigers managed just seven hits and struck out 14 times.

Rutschman doubled and singled. Taveras doubled and singled. Cowser singled. Ward singled. Coby Mayo singled. Blaze Alexander doubled. The Orioles left 11 runners on base.

The two teams play again Saturday and Sunday at Camden Yards before Detroit returns home to face the Los Angeles Angels. Baltimore opens a three-game series Monday against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Baltimore 4, Detroit 2, and the ELO system gave Baltimore a 51.70 percent probability to win. The Orioles entered as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 11 went under the over-under line of 9.
