Marte, Perdomo lead Diamondbacks past Giants 6‑3

PHOENIX (Interstat) — Ketel Marte had three hits including a two-run homer, Geraldo Perdomo drove in three runs and the Arizona Diamondbacks completed a three-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants with a 6-3 victory Wednesday afternoon at Chase Field.

Merrill Kelly (4-3) allowed three runs on eight hits over six innings, striking out four, to earn his third consecutive quality start. Paul Sewald worked a scoreless ninth for his 11th save. Tyler Mahle (1-6) took the loss for San Francisco.

Arizona improved to 25-23 with its fourth straight win and fifth in six games. San Francisco fell to 20-30.

The Diamondbacks broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the fifth inning, a rally that proved decisive.

San Francisco struck first in the top of the first when Casey Schmitt hit a solo home run to left field, his ninth of the season. The Giants added a run in the second on a double by Bryce Eldridge that scored Matt Chapman, and another in the fourth on an RBI single by Drew Gilbert that plated Chapman, giving the Giants a 3-1 lead.

Arizona answered quickly. Ketel Marte hit a two-run homer in the third inning, scoring Ryan Waldschmidt to tie the game at 3-3.

The game remained tied until the fifth. Tim Tawa led off the inning with a single. Waldschmidt followed with a single, and Marte bunted for a single to load the bases. Ildemaro Vargas grounded out to first base, scoring Tawa to give Arizona a 4-3 lead. Perdomo then doubled to right field, driving in Waldschmidt and Marte to extend the lead to 6-3.

That was all the offense Arizona needed. Kelly settled in after the fourth inning, retiring nine of the final 11 batters he faced. The bullpen combination of Taylor Clarke, Brandyn Garcia and Brandon Pfaadt held San Francisco scoreless over the final three innings, allowing just one hit.

San Francisco had its chances but could not capitalize. The Giants left seven runners on base and struck out nine times. Matt Chapman had two hits and scored twice, but the Giants managed only eight hits total.

For Arizona, Marte finished 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Waldschmidt had two hits and scored twice. Perdomo’s three RBIs came on a sacrifice fly and a double.

The Diamondbacks have now won the first three meetings between the teams this season, outscoring the Giants 23-8. They will host the Colorado Rockies on Thursday as they begin a four-game series.

San Francisco returns home to face the Chicago White Sox on Friday.

The game took 2 hours, 18 minutes and drew a crowd of 17,748 at Chase Field.
