Dodgers sweep Angels with 10‑1 victory, Sasaki dominant
ANAHEIM, Calif. (Interstat) — Roki Sasaki allowed one run and struck out eight over seven innings, Kyle Tucker had three hits and drove in three runs, and the Los Angeles Dodgers completed a weekend sweep of the Los Angeles Angels with a 10-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Angel Stadium.
Sasaki (2-3) made his best start in two major league seasons, yielding four hits without issuing a walk over a career-high seven innings. He threw 91 pitches and set a career high with eight strikeouts while retiring the side in order four times. The right-hander, who spent much of last season recovering from injury before shifting to a postseason bullpen role, continued his transition back to the rotation with command of four pitches.
The Dodgers built a 2-0 lead in the second inning and broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning that chased Angels starter Grayson Rodriguez (0-1). Shohei Ohtani delivered a two-run single and Andy Pages followed with a two-run single in the fourth, part of a seven-run outburst over the middle innings that gave Los Angeles a 7-0 advantage.
Tucker, who singled and scored in the second and added an RBI single in the fourth, capped his afternoon with a two-run double in the ninth inning that extended the margin to 10-1. He finished 3 for 5 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored.
The Dodgers outscored the Angels 31-3 over the three-game Freeway Series, their fifth consecutive victory overall. The two-time defending World Series champions improved to 29-18, while the Angels fell to 16-31, matching the majors’ worst record.
Angel Stadium drew 44,809 fans for the 2-hour, 28-minute contest, the shortest game of the series.
Grayson Rodriguez, making his second start of the season for the Angels, lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks. The right-hander, who began the year in the minors, has lost both of his decisions since being recalled.
The most decisive sequence came in the top of the fourth inning. After the Dodgers had already taken a 2-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Miguel Rojas and an RBI single by Hyeseong Kim in the second, they sent nine batters to the plate in the fourth against Rodriguez.
Teoscar Hernández led off with a walk. After Max Muncy struck out and Dalton Rushing flied out, Miguel Rojas singled to left field, moving Hernández to second. Kim then singled to first base, loading the bases. Ohtani lined a single to right field, scoring Hernández and Rojas and moving Kim to third. Freddie Freeman walked to reload the bases. Pages then lined a single to left, scoring Kim and Ohtani and sending Freeman to second. Tucker followed with a single to center that scored Freeman, making it 7-0. Hernández flied out to center to end the inning, but the damage was done.
Rodriguez was removed after Ohtani’s single, having thrown 76 pitches. The Dodgers’ five-run inning matched their largest single-inning output of the series.
Sasaki retired the first 10 batters he faced before Mike Trout doubled with two outs in the bottom of the first. Trout later stranded at second when Nolan Schanuel struck out.
The Angels scored their only run in the fourth inning against Sasaki. With one out, Schanuel singled to right field. Jorge Soler struck out, but Yoán Moncada singled to right, scoring Schanuel. The rally stalled when Jo Adell grounded out to second.
Sasaki answered by retiring the next eight batters he faced before leaving after the seventh. He allowed four hits, struck out eight and walked none. His six-inning streak without a walk extended his major league career high.
Tucker’s two-run double in the ninth inning, off reliever Ryan Johnson, scored Kim and Pages and was followed by a run-scoring single by Hernández that capped the scoring.
Mike Trout finished 1 for 4 with a double for the Angels. Nolan Schanuel had two hits, including a single in the fourth. Yoán Moncada drove in the lone Angels run with his fourth-inning single.
Zach Neto went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. Jorge Soler went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. Logan O’Hoppe went 0 for 3.
Mitch Farris pitched two scoreless innings for the Angels, striking out three and allowing no hits.
The Dodgers now travel to San Diego for a three-game series against the Padres beginning Monday. The Angels return home Monday to begin a four-game series against the Athletics.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Los Angeles Dodgers 5, Los Angeles Angels 3. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Dodgers a 71.40 percent probability to win. Los Angeles had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5 runs. The total score of 11 went under the over/under line of 9.5.
