Mets overcome four-run deficit, beat Yankees in 10 innings
NEW YORK (Interstat) — Tyrone Taylor’s pinch-hit, three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning erased a three-run deficit and forced extra innings, and the New York Mets pushed across a run in the 10th to defeat the New York Yankees 7-6 on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field.
The Mets, who had lost the opener of the three-game Subway Series on Friday before bouncing back Saturday, improved to 20-26. The Yankees fell to 28-19 and saw their two-game winning streak in the series snapped.
Yankees starter Elmer Rodríguez worked 4⅓ innings, allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out one. But the Mets’ bullpen and a late rally overshadowed his solid outing.
The Yankees struck first in the third inning. Ben Rice led off the top of the third with his 15th home run of the season, a solo shot to center field off Mets starter Sean Manaea, giving New York a 1-0 lead. Manaea allowed two earned runs on four hits over four innings, striking out three.
The Mets answered in the fourth. With one out, Mark Vientos singled and Brett Baty followed with a single. Marcus Semien then doubled to right field, scoring Vientos and sending Baty to third. The inning ended with the Mets still trailing 1-0.
The Yankees broke the game open in the sixth. Facing Mets reliever Freddy Peralta, the Yankees loaded the bases with a walk, a walk and a sacrifice bunt by Ryan McMahon. Paul Goldschmidt was hit by a pitch to force in a run, and Anthony Volpe singled to left, scoring two more. Amed Rosario added a sacrifice fly, and a fielding error by shortstop Bo Bichette allowed another run to score. By the time the inning ended, the Yankees had scored four runs and led 5-1.
The Mets chipped away in the bottom of the sixth. Marcus Semien singled, A.J. Ewing walked, and Luis Torrens doubled to right, driving in both runners to cut the lead to 5-3.
The Yankees added a run in the seventh. After a single by Cody Bellinger and an infield hit by Jazz Chisholm Jr., Anthony Volpe drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Bellinger, making it 6-3.
Yankees relievers Jake Bird, Camilo Doval and Fernando Cruz held the Mets scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings. Doval pitched a clean eighth, striking out none but retiring three batters on 10 pitches.
With three outs to go and trailing 6-3, the Mets mounted a dramatic ninth-inning rally. Carson Benge led off with a single and Bo Bichette followed with a single. Juan Soto grounded into a force out, putting runners at the corners with one out. Mark Vientos struck out swinging, but during the at-bat Soto stole second base. That brought up Tyrone Taylor, who was hitting for the first time since entering the game as a pinch hitter in the fifth inning. Taylor crushed a 1-0 pitch from Yankees reliever Tim Hill over the left-field wall for a three-run home run, tying the game 6-6.
Hill took the loss, his first of the season in one decision. He allowed three runs on two hits and a walk in one-third of an inning.
The Yankees went quietly in the top of the 10th. Max Schuemann struck out, Anthony Volpe walked, and Austin Wells grounded into a double play.
In the bottom of the 10th, the Mets began with Marcus Semien as the automatic runner on second base. A.J. Ewing sacrificed him to third. Luis Torrens was hit by a pitch. Carson Benge then hit a ground ball to left fielder Max Schuemann, who fielded it but committed an error, allowing Semien to score the winning run. Benge was credited with a fielder’s choice.
Devin Williams earned the win, pitching a scoreless 10th inning with one strikeout. He improved to 3-1. The game lasted 3 hours, 12 minutes in front of 40,232 at Citi Field.
Key performances included Anthony Volpe’s two hits and three RBIs for the Yankees. Tyrone Taylor finished 1-for-3 with the home run and three RBIs. Sean Manaea and Freddy Peralta each contributed on the mound for the Mets, combining for nine innings of work.
The Mets won despite being out-hit 11-6. The Yankees stranded eight runners and went 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position. The Mets converted five of their 14 opportunities.
The series wraps up with the Mets having won two of three. The Yankees return home to face the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. The Mets travel to Washington to begin a four-game series against the Nationals.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Mets 5, Yankees 3. Its ELO system gave the Yankees a 59.20 percent probability to win. New York entered as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The combined total of 13 runs went over the over-under line of 8.
