Philadelphia Phillies at Boston Red Sox
BOSTON (Interstat) — The Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox conclude a two-game series Wednesday night at Fenway Park, with the Phillies aiming to build on a shutout win in the opener.
Philadelphia (19-22), coming off a 2-0 victory Tuesday and a series sweep of Colorado, faces a decision on its starter. The club lists both right-handers Andrew Painter (1-4, 4.91 ERA) and Sonny Gray (3-1, 2.84 ERA) as probable in a potential tandem or bullpen arrangement. The Phillies have won four of five.
Boston (17-23) dropped the series opener and lost two of three to Tampa Bay, scoring one run in its past two games. The Red Sox counter with right-hander Payton Tolle (1-3, 4.50 ERA).
A player to watch for Philadelphia is left-hander Cristopher Sánchez, who has won three straight starts. In his most recent outing Sunday, Sánchez tossed seven innings of six-hit shutout ball with seven strikeouts in a 6-0 win over Colorado. Over his past three starts, he has a 0.83 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings.
For Boston, Tolle will look to rebound. He allowed three runs over five innings in a 4-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday, struggling with command after a dominant outing May 4 in Detroit, where he threw seven innings of one-hit shutout ball with eight strikeouts.
Wednesday’s forecast calls for 62 degrees and cloudy skies.
Philadelphia won Tuesday’s game behind catcher J.T. Realmuto’s run-scoring double and a strong bullpen performance. The Phillies’ offense has produced 27 runs over their past four victories.
The Red Sox have lost 10 of 14 and rank near the bottom of the American League in runs scored. Outfielder Jarren Duran is 7 for 17 (.412) in his past four games.
The Interstat game simulator projects a 6-4 Phillies victory.
Following Wednesday’s game, the Phillies travel to Pittsburgh for a three-game series against the Pirates starting Friday. The Red Sox visit Atlanta for a weekend series.
