Royals Rally Falls Short in 6‑5 Loss to White Sox
CHICAGO (Interstat) — Derek Hill’s solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Chicago White Sox to a 6-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.
The White Sox snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 20-21, while the Royals fell to 19-23. The game lasted 2 hours, 33 minutes before an announced crowd of 13,256.
Kansas City jumped ahead early with a pair of solo home runs in the first inning. Bobby Witt Jr. led off the top of the first with a homer to right field, his sixth of the season. Two batters later, Salvador Perez crushed a line drive to right-center for his sixth home run, giving the Royals a 2-0 lead.
Royals starter Stephen Kolek settled in after the first, retiring eight of the first nine White Sox hitters he faced. Through four innings, Kolek had allowed only two baserunners, both on walks, and struck out six. The Royals added to their lead with three runs in the sixth inning, but the game turned decisively in the bottom of the fifth.
With the Royals leading 2-0, White Sox catcher Drew Romo led off the fifth with a solo homer to right, his fourth of the season, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Sam Antonacci followed with a double, and after Munetaka Murakami struck out, Miguel Vargas singled to center, scoring Antonacci and tying the game at 2-2. Colson Montgomery walked, bringing up second baseman Chase Meidroth. Meidroth launched a three-run homer to left field, his third of the season, scoring Vargas and Montgomery and giving Chicago a 5-2 lead.
Kolek finished the inning having allowed five earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings. He was replaced by Luinder Avila, who retired all four batters he faced, striking out two.
The Royals answered in the top of the sixth. Carter Jensen led off with a walk, and after Jac Caglianone lined out, Isaac Collins doubled to left, sending Jensen to third. Pinch-hitter Nick Loftin then doubled to left, scoring both Jensen and Collins, cutting the White Sox lead to 5-4. Kyle Isbel flied out, but Maikel Garcia singled to right, scoring Loftin and tying the game at 5-5. Bobby Witt Jr. struck out to end the inning.
Avila worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth, and the game remained tied into the seventh. Royals reliever Matt Strahm took over in the seventh and allowed a leadoff single to Miguel Vargas, but Vargas was erased on a popout, and Strahm struck out the next batter. In the eighth, Hill, who entered as a pinch-runner for Vargas the previous inning, stepped in as a pinch-hitter for Randal Grichuk. With one out, Hill crushed a fly ball over the left-center fence for his third homer, putting the White Sox ahead 6-5.
Strahm was charged with the loss, his first of the season against one win. He allowed one earned run on one hit in one inning.
The Royals threatened in the top of the ninth against White Sox closer Bryan Hudson. Witt lined out to right, Vinnie Pasquantino grounded out, and Perez flied out to right in foul territory, giving Hudson his second save of the season. White Sox reliever Seranthony Domínguez earned the win, his third against three losses, after pitching a scoreless seventh inning.
Kansas City outhit Chicago 11-7. Perez led the Royals with two hits, including his homer and an RBI, and Loftin drove in two runs with a double. Pasquantino also had two hits. For the White Sox, Romo and Meidroth each homered, and Meidroth drove in three runs. Vargas had two hits and an RBI.
The winning pitcher was Domínguez, who improved to 3-3. Strahm fell to 1-1. Hudson recorded his second save of the season.
The game marked the latest chapter in a season series that had been split 2-2 entering the night, with each team winning twice at home. The White Sox lost two of three to Kansas City at Guaranteed Rate Field in April before winning the series finale. The Royals had taken two of three from Detroit in their previous series, while the White Sox dropped two of three at home to Seattle.
Kansas City’s next game is Wednesday night at Chicago, with a left-hander scheduled to start for the Royals against a White Sox right-hander. The series continues Thursday before the Royals travel to St. Louis for a weekend set. The White Sox host the Chicago Cubs for a three-game series beginning Friday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Kansas City 6, Chicago 5, and its ELO system gave the Royals a 56.30 percent probability to win. Kansas City had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total of 11 runs went under the over-under line of 9.
