Castellanos homer, Machado sac fly lift Padres past Cardinals

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Nick Castellanos hit a tying, two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning and Manny Machado delivered a sacrifice fly in the 10th to rally the San Diego Padres past the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 on Sunday.

The Padres earned a split of the four-game series and pulled into a tie with the rival Los Angeles Dodgers atop the NL West.

Walker Buehler pitched six solid innings for San Diego, allowing three hits and two runs with two strikeouts. Jordan Walker launched a two-run homer for St. Louis in the fourth inning. Kyle Leahy held the Padres to two hits over five shutout innings with five strikeouts.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth when Alec Burleson singled sharply to right field off Buehler. Jordan Walker followed by driving a 1-2 pitch over the left-field wall for his 11th home run of the season, giving St. Louis a 2-0 lead. The Cardinals offense managed only three hits all afternoon but made them count with a two-run blast.

Leahy dominated through the middle innings, retiring 10 of the final 11 batters he faced after allowing a double to Xander Bogaerts in the fourth. He finished with 63 pitches, 42 strikes, and generated 10 swings and misses. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 2.70 and kept the Padres off balance with a mix of fastballs and changeups.

Buehler answered by retiring 10 of his last 12 hitters after Walker’s homer. He allowed only one more hit after the fourth, a single by JJ Wetherholt in the sixth, and induced soft contact throughout his outing. The Padres right-hander threw 81 pitches, 53 strikes, and struck out two without walking a batter.

St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol turned to his bullpen after Leahy departed. JoJo Romero worked 1 1/3 hitless innings with two strikeouts. Ryne Stanek followed with a perfect eighth, striking out two. George Soriano retired the only two batters he faced in the ninth before giving way to closer Gordon Graceffo.

The Padres mounted their comeback against Graceffo in the bottom of the ninth. Xander Bogaerts led off with a line-drive single to center field. Miguel Andujar struck out swinging. Ty France struck out swinging. Castellanos then stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and drove a 1-1 fastball from Graceffo to left-center field for a game-tying two-run homer, his second of the season. The ball traveled an estimated 408 feet and landed beyond the wall just inside the left-center field gap. Ramón Laureano struck out swinging to end the inning.

The game moved to extra innings. Ron Marinaccio worked two hitless innings for San Diego, striking out three. Bradgley Rodriguez followed with a clean 10th inning, retiring the side in order. St. Louis went quietly against Adrian Morejon in the top of the 10th, with Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman striking out swinging before Masyn Winn walked and Jose Fermin popped out.

Graceffo remained in the game for St. Louis in the bottom of the 10th. He intentionally walked Jackson Merrill to open the inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. then walked, loading the bases. Machado stepped to the plate and lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Laureano, who had entered as a pinch runner in the ninth.

Morejon earned the win, improving to 3-1. Graceffo took the loss, falling to 2-1.

St. Louis finished with three hits. Jordan Walker’s homer accounted for both runs. The Cardinals struck out 12 times and drew only two walks. San Diego managed four hits, including Bogaerts’ double and single and a single by Jackson Merrill. The Padres struck out 13 times but drew seven walks.

The game took 2 hours, 47 minutes before a crowd of 39,795 at PETCO Park.

St. Louis fell to 23-17. The Cardinals had won two of the first three games of the series, including a 2-1 victory Thursday and a 6-0 shutout Friday. They lost 4-2 on Saturday. The Cardinals entered Sunday having won four of their previous six games but have struggled to generate consistent offense, scoring two runs or fewer in five of their last nine contests.

San Diego improved to 24-16, moving into a first-place tie with the Dodgers. The Padres have won four of their last five games after dropping two of three to the Chicago White Sox at home last weekend. Buehler’s outing marked his third consecutive quality start since a rough outing against the Chicago Cubs on April 28. He allowed two runs or fewer for the fourth time in seven starts this season.

The Padres bullpen continued to excel. Marinaccio lowered his ERA to 1.35 with two hitless innings. Rodriguez has not allowed an earned run in his last five appearances. Morejon has won three straight decisions.

St. Louis relievers also performed well. Romero has not allowed an earned run in his last 10 outings. Stanek struck out two in a perfect inning. Soriano retired both batters he faced. But Graceffo could not hold the lead in the ninth.

Jordan Walker’s homer was his team-leading 11th of the season. He has driven in 28 runs. Alec Burleson extended his hitting streak to six games with his single in the fourth.

The Cardinals will travel to to face the Athletics on Tuesday. San Diego will visit Milwaukee to begin a three-game series against the Brewers.
