Rodríguez’s single in 12th lifts Giants past Pirates 7‑6

SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — Jesús Rodríguez delivered a walk-off RBI single in the 12th inning, and the San Francisco Giants rallied twice from two-run deficits to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6 on Sunday evening at Oracle Park.

The Giants loaded the bases with no outs against Pirates reliever Justin Lawrence, who entered with a 0-1 record. Matt Chapman started the frame with a double that advanced Heliot Ramos, the automatic runner at second, only to third base. After an intentional walk to Drew Gilbert, Rodríguez lined a single to right field, scoring Ramos and handing the Giants just their third victory in their previous 12 games.

The winning pitcher was Ryan Borucki, who worked two scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out one to improve to 1-1. Lawrence took the loss, falling to 0-2, after giving up the decisive run on one hit and one walk in the 12th.

The Pirates had taken a 6-4 lead in the top of the 10th inning. With the automatic runner Nick Gonzales at second, Marcell Ozuna was hit by a pitch, and Spencer Horwitz doubled to center, driving in both runners. The Giants answered immediately in the bottom half. Against Lawrence, Luis Arraez and Christian Koss, both placed as automatic runners, scored on a two-run single by Willy Adames to tie the game at 6-6.

San Francisco had trailed 4-2 after six innings but tied it in the bottom of the sixth. Rafael Devers doubled, and Heliot Ramos followed with an RBI double. After a groundout moved Ramos to third, Matt Chapman doubled to left, scoring Ramos to make it 4-3. Drew Gilbert then grounded out, advancing Chapman to third, but Jesús Rodríguez grounded out to end the inning with the Giants still down 4-3. However, the Giants tied the game in the sixth on a double by Chapman.

Pittsburgh had taken an early lead. In the first inning, Oneil Cruz walked and scored on a single by Nick Gonzales. In the second, Konnor Griffin homered to center, his third of the season. The Pirates added a run in the fifth when Cruz homered to left-center, his 10th. In the sixth, Ryan O’Hearn singled and scored on a double by Spencer Horwitz, making it 4-1.

San Francisco chipped away. In the third, Jung Hoo Lee doubled and scored on a single by Luis Arraez. In the fourth, Heliot Ramos homered to left-center, his fourth. That cut the deficit to 4-2.

The game remained deadlocked through the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Pittsburgh had a chance to break it open in the eighth when Ryan O’Hearn reached on an error by second baseman Luis Arraez and Marcell Ozuna walked. But Spencer Horwitz grounded into a double play, and Konnor Griffin walked before Bryan Reynolds lined out to left.

In the ninth, the Pirates put Henry Davis on base with a walk but could not advance him. The Giants went quietly in the ninth against Pirates reliever Mason Montgomery, who retired the side in order.

The extra-inning drama began in the 10th. After Pittsburgh scored two, the Giants got two back on Adames’ single. In the 11th, each team failed to score despite having runners in scoring position. The Pirates left Henry Davis stranded after a walk in the top half. The Giants loaded the bases in the bottom of the 11th against Yohan Ramírez, who intentionally walked Luis Arraez and Bryce Eldridge. But Christian Koss grounded into a force out at home, and Heliot Ramos grounded out to first.

In the 12th, Pittsburgh put the automatic runner Brandon Lowe at second. Nick Gonzales grounded out, moving Lowe to third. Ryan O’Hearn grounded out, holding Lowe. Borucki intentionally walked Marcell Ozuna, and Spencer Horwitz walked to load the bases. But Konnor Griffin lined out to third to end the threat.

The Giants then won it in the bottom half. Heliot Ramos started as the automatic runner at second. Willy Adames struck out. Matt Chapman doubled to right, advancing Ramos to third. Lawrence intentionally walked Drew Gilbert to load the bases. Rodríguez then singled to right to end the game.
