Minnesota Twins at Cleveland Guardians

CLEVELAND (Interstat) — The Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Guardians close out a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Progressive Field, where rain and a 68-degree first-pitch temperature are forecast. The Guardians (21-19) have won two of three in the set heading into the finale, while the Twins (16-23) look to snap a three-game skid.

Minnesota is expected to start right-hander Gavin Williams (5-2, 3.12 ERA), who has won his last two decisions. The 2024 first-round pick has allowed two earned runs or fewer in seven of his nine starts this season. Cleveland has not announced a starter for Sunday, but left-hander Parker Messick (3-3, 3.41) is a player to watch. Messick earned the win Friday in the series opener, allowing one earned run over 5 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts in a 6-4 victory. Over his past three outings, the 24-year-old has posted a 1.75 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings.

Twins lefty Connor Prielipp also has been effective against Cleveland. The rookie took a no-decision Friday, scattering four hits and one earned run over five innings with six strikeouts. Prielipp has a 2.16 ERA in his last three starts, striking out 15 over 15 innings.

Cleveland won Friday 6-4, powered by second baseman Travis Bazzana’s two-run homer and a strong bullpen effort from Tim Herrin, who threw a scoreless inning. The Guardians have won four of their last five. Cleveland is 11-8 at Progressive Field this season.

Minnesota lost Friday despite center fielder Byron Buxton’s three-hit, two-RBI day, including a home run. The Twins have dropped four of their last five and are 5-12 on the road.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-3 Guardians victory.

After Sunday, Cleveland opens a three-game home series Monday against the Los Angeles Angels. Minnesota hosts Miami on Tuesday to begin a six-game homestand.
