Los Angeles Angels at Toronto Blue Jays
TORONTO (Interstat) — The Los Angeles Angels, losers of two straight to begin a four-game series, look to salvage a split Sunday afternoon against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.
The Angels (15-25) have dropped the first two games by a combined 16-1, including a 14-1 rout Saturday. Toronto (18-21) has won four of its last five overall and three of four head-to-head meetings this season.
Los Angeles is expected to start right-hander José Soriano (5-2, 3.12 ERA) or left-hander Eric Lauer (1-4, 5.40). Soriano has been the more reliable arm, but the Angels’ bullpen has been taxed heavily in the series.
Toronto has not announced a starter.
The Blue Jays’ offense has overwhelmed Angels pitching, scoring 16 runs on 24 hits over the first two games. Catcher Brandon Valenzuela has been the catalyst, going 4 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs in Saturday’s win. In his past eight games, Valenzuela is 9 for 25 with three homers and eight RBIs.
Angels reliever Mitch Farris took the loss Saturday, allowing six hits and three earned runs over three innings in a spot start. Across his last four outings, Farris has an 8.44 ERA, yielding 18 hits in 12 innings.
The series has been lopsided since Toronto took two of three at Angel Stadium in April. In the last four meetings, the Blue Jays have outscored Los Angeles 23-10.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-2 Toronto victory. The Angels are installed as -1.5 run favorites, with the over/under set at 8.
After Sunday’s game, the Angels travel to Cleveland for a three-game set starting Monday. The Blue Jays host Tampa Bay for a three-game series.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:07 p.m. EDT.
