Junior Caminero homers, Martinez sharp as Rays top Red Sox 4‑1

BOSTON (Interstat) -- Junior Caminero hit a solo homer over the Green Monster, Nick Martinez pitched one-run ball into the sixth inning and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Boston Red Sox 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park to win the rain-shortened series.

Tampa Bay won for the 14th time in 16 games after its seven-game winning streak was stopped Friday. The Rays gave up three or fewer runs for a franchise-record 16th straight game, the first team to accomplish that feat since the 2010 San Francisco Giants did it in 18 consecutive contests.

Pitching two years and a day after his mother, Jina, died following a nearly eight-year battle with colon cancer, Boston starter Payton Tolle wore his pant legs near his knees to show his pink socks on Mother’s Day.

The decisive portion of the game came in the third inning, when Tampa Bay scored two runs with the help of a Boston error to take a 3-0 lead. After Nick Fortes led off the top of the third with a single to center, Taylor Walls sacrificed him to second. Chandler Simpson then grounded a ball to left field that was deflected by shortstop Trevor Story, allowing Fortes to score and Simpson to reach second on the error. After Caminero flied out, Ben Williamson singled to right field, scoring Simpson and giving the Rays a three-run cushion.

Tampa Bay had opened the scoring in the first inning when Caminero launched his 11th home run of the season to left-center field off Tolle.

The Rays added an insurance run in the sixth. Ben Williamson walked to start the inning, Yandy Díaz flied out, and Jonathan Aranda singled to right to put runners at the corners. Cedric Mullins then executed a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher, scoring Williamson and moving Aranda to second.

Boston got its only run in the bottom of the sixth against Martinez. Trevor Story led off with a double to left, and Mickey Gasper singled to right to drive him in, cutting the deficit to 4-1. But Martinez induced a groundout from Marcelo Mayer and then struck out Ceddanne Rafaela on a foul tip to end the inning.

Martinez improved to 4-1 on the season, allowing seven hits and one earned run over 5 2/3 innings with three strikeouts. He threw 85 pitches. The right-hander continued a strong stretch that included wins over Toronto and Cleveland in his previous two starts. On May 4, he held the Blue Jays to one run over five innings, and on April 28, he threw seven scoreless innings against the Guardians.

Bryan Baker earned his 10th save by working a scoreless ninth inning. He allowed one hit and struck out one. Kevin Kelly tossed 1 1/3 perfect innings with one strikeout, and Garrett Cleavinger struck out three in a perfect eighth inning. The Rays bullpen combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings.

Tolle took the loss, dropping to 1-2. He allowed seven hits and three earned runs over five innings with four strikeouts. The left-hander walked one but kept the Rays off the board after the third.

Mickey Gasper led Boston’s offense with a 3-for-4 day, including an RBI single and two doubles. Gasper doubled in the second and again in the ninth. Story doubled and scored the Red Sox’s only run. Jarren Duran, Andruw Monasterio and Masataka Yoshida each had a hit for Boston.

Tampa Bay collected eight hits, matching Boston’s total. Simpson, Williamson, Díaz, Fortes, Mullins and Aranda each had hits, with Simpson scoring twice and Williamson driving in a run.

The game lasted 2 hours, 42 minutes before an announced crowd of 33,489 at Fenway Park.

Tampa Bay improved to 26-13, while Boston fell to 17-23.

The Rays next travel to Toronto for a three-game series beginning Monday. Boston returns home Tuesday to host the Philadelphia Phillies for a three-game set.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Tampa Bay 8, Boston 5. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Boston with a 53.30 percent probability to win. Boston had been installed as a pre-game favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total of five runs went over the over-under line of 8.5.
