New York Mets at Arizona Diamondbacks

PHOENIX (Interstat) — The New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks meet Saturday at Chase Field, with both teams looking to shake off recent losses and gain traction in the early season.

RHP Clay Holmes (4-2) is scheduled to start for the Mets, opposed by RHP Merrill Kelly (1-3) for Arizona on the 7:10 p.m. EDT first pitch.

New York (14-23) dropped Thursday’s series opener in Colorado 6-2, while Arizona (17-19) lost to Pittsburgh 4-2 on Thursday at home. The series opener Friday was postponed due to rain.

Holmes has been a bright spot for the Mets, who own the majors’ worst record. The right-hander has posted a solid ERA and kept the club in games. Kelly has struggled to find consistency, with his lone win coming April 18 against Toronto.

Players to watch

Mets RHP Christian Scott, who is 0-3 with a 5.73 ERA, has shown flashes of dominance. In four appearances this season — three starts and one relief outing — he has struck out 16 in 11 innings. Most recently, he allowed one earned run over 4 2/3 innings in Thursday’s loss at Colorado, striking out six. He also fanned eight in a win against the Los Angeles Angels on May 1.

Diamondbacks RHP Zac Gallen has been effective despite recent losses. He allowed four earned runs over six innings in Thursday’s loss to Pittsburgh. In his previous start, he yielded six earned runs in 3 2/3 innings at Chicago. Gallen struck out three in three scoreless innings against San Diego on April 25.

Recent history

The Diamondbacks took two of three from the Mets in an early April series in New York, winning 7-1 on April 9 and 7-2 on April 8. The Mets salvaged a 4-3 win on April 7.

The Mets are -1.5 run-line favorites, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. The over/under is 8.5 runs. Despite the betting line favoring New York, the Interstat game simulator projects a 4-3 Diamondbacks win, with Arizona holding a 56.3% win probability under its ELO system.
