Blue Jays rout Angels 14‑1 behind Valenzuela, Clement

TORONTO (Interstat) — Brandon Valenzuela hit a three-run home run, Ernie Clement had a solo homer among a career-high tying five hits and the Toronto Blue Jays used a seven-run fifth inning to rout the Los Angeles Angels 14-1 on Saturday afternoon at Rogers Centre.

Mason Fluharty (2-0) worked one inning for the win as Toronto set season highs in runs and hits, with 20. Clement had infield singles in the second and fourth, then drove in a run with a hard single in the fifth. He homered in the seventh and added another single in the ninth. Valenzuela went 4-for-5 with four RBIs, including a double and a home run. Jesus Sanchez homered and drove in two runs, and George Springer had two hits and a double.

Jack Kochanowicz (2-2) took the loss for the Angels, allowing five runs, four earned, over 4 1/3 innings. Mitch Farris followed and allowed three runs over three innings as the Blue Jays piled on.

The Angels struck first. Jorge Soler led off the second inning with a double, moved to third on a single by Yoan Moncada, but Vaughn Grissom lined into a double play to end the threat. Los Angeles stranded two more runners in the third and fourth innings, failing to score.

Toronto tied the game in the fourth. Jesus Sanchez was hit by a pitch, Daulton Varsho singled and Clement singled to load the bases. Andres Gimenez then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Sanchez.

The Blue Jays broke the game open in the fifth. Addison Barger walked, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled and Kazuma Okamoto singled to drive in Barger. Sanchez singled to score Guerrero, and a throwing error by Kochanowicz on a ground ball from Varsho allowed Okamoto to score. Clement then singled home Sanchez, and Valenzuela followed with a three-run homer to left field, his fourth of the season. Toronto sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven times on six hits, taking an 8-1 lead.

Clement added a solo home run in the seventh, his second of the year. Guerrero later singled to score Valenzuela, stretching the lead to 10-1.

The Angels scored their only run in the eighth. Bryce Teodosio reached on a fielder’s choice, Nolan Schanuel singled and Adam Frazier doubled to drive in Teodosio. The rally stalled when Jo Adell grounded out.

Toronto answered with four more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Sanchez homered to right field, his fifth. Varsho singled, Clement singled, and Valenzuela doubled to score Varsho. Tyler Heineman grounded out to bring home Clement, and Davis Schneider singled to score Valenzuela, making it 14-1.

Trey Yesavage started for Toronto and pitched four scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out six. Fluharty, Braydon Fisher, Joe Mantiply and Tommy Nance combined for four shutout innings of relief, with Nance allowing three hits in the ninth. The Blue Jays pitching staff struck out eight Angels batters and walked only one.

Los Angeles pitchers combined for 22 strikes, 39 balls and 22 balls in play. Toronto pitchers had 8 strikes, 62 balls and 8 balls in play.

It was the second straight victory for the Blue Jays over the Angels, following a 2-0 win on Friday. Toronto has now won three of four meetings between the teams this season.

Valenzuela, who entered the game 1-for-9 in his previous four contests, snapped a slump with his big day. Clement’s five-hit performance matched his career high, set earlier this season.

The Angels managed only 10 hits, with Moncada, Josh Lowe and Zach Neto each collecting two hits. Los Angeles grounded into two double plays and struck out 10 times.
