Early, homers lead Red Sox past Rays 2‑0

BOSTON -- (Interstat) — Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela hit solo home runs in consecutive innings, Connelly Early struck out eight over seven scoreless innings and the Boston Red Sox snapped the Tampa Bay Rays’ seven-game winning streak with a 2-0 victory Friday night at Fenway Park before 35,052 fans.

The game took 2 hours, 30 minutes.

Boston improved to 17-22, while Tampa Bay dropped to 25-13. The Rays were shut out for the first time this season, managing only four hits and failing to advance a runner past second base after the third inning.

Early (3-2) labored through a career-high 96 pitches, allowing four hits and one walk. He struck out eight and retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced. The left-hander bounced back from his shortest outing of the season, a 4-inning, five-earned-run start at Houston on May 2.

Jesse Scholtens (3-2) took the loss for Tampa Bay, allowing two runs on two hits over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked three.

Aroldis Chapman recorded his eighth save with a perfect ninth inning, striking out two.

The back-to-back solo shots were the only runs of the game. Abreu put Boston ahead in the third inning, driving a 1-1 pitch from Scholtens over the right-center field fence for his sixth home run. One inning later, Rafaela connected on a 2-0 pitch to left field for his third homer, giving the Red Sox a 2-0 lead.

Early took over from there. He allowed a one-out single to Nick Fortes in the fifth then struck out Taylor Walls and Yandy Díaz to end the inning. Tampa Bay’s final base runner came in the sixth when Jonathan Aranda drew a one-out walk, but Early induced a popout from Jonny DeLuca to end the frame.

The Rays had their best scoring chance in the third. Fortes led off with a single, and Taylor Walls followed with a line-drive single to left, putting runners at first and third. Díaz was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Early then struck out Ryan Vilade swinging and got Junior Caminero to ground into a 5-4-3 double play, ending the threat.

Tampa Bay finished with four hits, all singles. Fortes had two hits, while Walls and Aranda each had one.

Boston also had four hits. Rafaela went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Abreu finished 1-for-2 with a walk and his solo homer. Jarren Duran singled in the seventh.

Mason Englert pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for the Rays, allowing two hits and striking out three. Garrett Whitlock tossed a perfect eighth for Boston, striking out two.

The Red Sox defense turned two double plays, one in the third inning to end the Tampa Bay threat and another in the sixth when a fielding error by third baseman Caminero put Rafaela on base, but a flyout and a popout stranded him.

Tampa Bay had won seven straight entering the game, including an 8-4 victory over Boston on Thursday in the series opener. The Rays had not lost since April 29 at Cleveland.

Boston had lost four of its previous five games before Friday’s win.

The game opened a three-game series at Fenway Park. The teams meet again Saturday and Sunday before Tampa Bay travels to Toronto for a three-game set beginning Monday. Boston hosts Philadelphia for three games starting Tuesday after the series with the Rays concludes.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Tampa Bay 8, Boston 6 but the Red Sox won 2-0. Interstat’s ELO system had given Boston a 53.60 percent probability to win. Boston was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The combined total of two runs went over the over/under line of 8.5.
