Athletics edge Orioles behind Kurtz’s triple, Bradish’s 10 Ks

BALTIMORE (Interstat) — Nick Kurtz hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning, and the Athletics edged the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 on Friday night before 39,311 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

The Athletics improved to 20-18 with their second straight win, while the Orioles dropped to 17-22 and fell to 0-9 this season against left-handed starters.

Hogan Harris recorded his second save of the season by striking out two in the ninth. Harris faced four batters in the final frame, allowing a single and a walk but escaping with the lead.

The Athletics struck first in the fifth after a quiet first four innings. Jacob Wilson led off with a single to first, and Lawrence Butler followed with a line-drive single to left. Zack Gelof then singled to left, scoring Wilson and moving Butler to second. Jeff McNeil grounded out, advancing both runners. Kurtz then tripled to right field, driving in Butler and Gelof. The Athletics added an insurance run in the eighth. Shea Langeliers singled to left to start the inning. After Tyler Soderstrom reached on a fielder’s choice that erased Langeliers at second, Brent Rooker singled sharply to left. Carlos Cortes flied out, then Wilson singled to right, scoring Soderstrom. The inning ended when Butler struck out.

Baltimore scored its first run in the fourth when Pete Alonso led off with a home run to right-center field, his eighth of the season. The Orioles cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth when Adley Rutschman homered to center, his fifth. In the ninth, with Harris on the mound, Rutschman walked and Alonso struck out. Dylan Beavers also struck out, but Samuel Basallo singled to center, scoring Rutschman to make it 4-3. Leody Taveras walked, putting runners at first and second. Jeremiah Jackson then struck out on a foul tip to end the game.

Kurtz finished 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Langeliers went 1 for 5 with three strikeouts. Geldoff had a hit and an RBI. Wilson had two hits and an RBI. Rooker had two hits. The Athletics outhit the Orioles 8-4.

Bradish’s 10 strikeouts were a season high, but he was tagged with his fifth loss. Trey Gibson pitched two innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts.

Lopez, who came into the game with a 4.70 ERA, had struggled in his previous start May 2 against Cleveland, allowing six earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. He rebounded Friday by holding Baltimore to two runs through five-plus innings. Joel Kuhnel pitched a scoreless eighth, and Scott Barlow threw a scoreless seventh with one strikeout. Justin Sterner recorded two outs in the sixth before being relieved by Barlow.
