Pirates’ Keller outduels Gallen in 4‑2 victory over Diamondbacks
PHOENIX (Interstat) — Brandon Lowe had three hits, including his 10th home run, and Joey Bart also went deep to back Mitch Keller, as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-2 Thursday at Chase Field.
Keller (4-1) allowed four hits and two runs over six innings, striking out four and walking two. The right-hander retired 10 consecutive batters between Corbin Carroll’s solo home run in the third inning and Ildemaro Vargas’ single leading off the seventh. Keller left after that hit, having thrown 84 pitches.
Pittsburgh took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Lowe led off the game with a home run to right field off Arizona starter Zac Gallen. Arizona answered in the bottom half when Adrian Del Castillo lined a two-out single to right, scoring Geraldo Perdomo to tie the game at 1.
Carroll put the Diamondbacks ahead 2-1 in the third with his fifth homer of the season, a fly ball to right center. But the Pirates seized control in the fifth inning with a two-out rally. After Joey Bart struck out and Oneil Cruz grounded out, Lowe singled sharply to right. Bryan Reynolds walked, and Ryan O’Hearn followed with a ground-ball single that deflected off first baseman Vargas, scoring Lowe and sending Reynolds to third. Spencer Horwitz then roped a single to right that brought home Reynolds for a 3-2 Pittsburgh lead.
Bart extended the lead in the sixth inning, launching a line-drive homer to left center, his second of the year, making it 4-2.
Arizona had chances to get back into the game but grounded into two double plays. The first came in the second inning when Alek Thomas grounded into a 4-6-3 twin killing with runners on first and third. The second came in the seventh when Jose Fernandez grounded into a shortstop-to-second-to-first double play after Vargas singled.
Dennis Santana worked a scoreless seventh inning for Pittsburgh, allowing one walk while striking out none. Isaac Mattson recorded the final out of the seventh on a strikeout, and Gregory Soto pitched a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout to earn his third save of the season.
Gallen (1-3) took the loss, allowing six hits and four runs over six innings. He struck out five and walked one. The Pirates had seven hits in the game while the Diamondbacks managed five.
Both teams had early opportunities. Pittsburgh put runners on second and third with one out in the third inning but came away empty when Reynolds flied out to left. Arizona left two runners on base in the second inning when Thomas grounded into the double play.
The most important sequence of the game came in the top of the fifth, when the Pirates strung together three straight two-out hits — a single by Lowe, a walk to Reynolds, and back-to-back RBI singles by O’Hearn and Horwitz — to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead they never relinquished.
Keller’s ability to retire 10 straight batters after Carroll’s homer kept the Diamondbacks from building on their lead and allowed the Pirates offense to rally. He retired the side in order in the fourth inning and worked around a leadoff walk in the first, facing 23 batters over his six innings.
The win improved Pittsburgh’s record to 21-17, while Arizona fell to 17-19. The Pirates took two of three in the series, having lost the opener 9-0 on Tuesday before winning 1-0 on Wednesday.
Keller is coming off two strong starts. On May 1 against Cincinnati, he pitched seven innings, allowing one run on three hits with six strikeouts in a 9-1 win. On April 25 at Milwaukee, he threw five innings, allowing three runs on five hits with six strikeouts in a 6-3 victory.
The Diamondbacks were led offensively by Carroll, who had two hits including his solo homer, and Del Castillo, who drove in a run. Ketel Marte and Jorge Barrosa each reached base once.
Pittsburgh will travel to San Francisco to open a three-game series against the Giants on Friday. Arizona will host the New York Mets for a three-game set starting Friday.
Next up for the Pirates: at San Francisco on Friday, at San Francisco on Saturday, at San Francisco on Sunday, then home against Colorado on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, followed by home games against Philadelphia on May 15-17 and a trip to St. Louis starting May 19.
Arizona will host the Mets for three games starting Friday, then travel to Texas to face the Rangers on Monday through Wednesday, followed by a three-game series at Colorado starting May 15, before returning home to host San Francisco on May 18.
