BOSTON (Interstat) — Pinch-hitter Chandler Simpson broke a sixth-inning tie with a two-run single and the Tampa Bay Rays won their seventh straight game by beating the Boston Red Sox 8-4 on Thursday night at Fenway Park.

Simpson added an RBI triple in the eighth inning and finished 2 for 2 with three RBIs. Junior Caminero hit a two-run homer in the ninth, his 10th of the season, and Yandy Díaz collected his 1,000th career hit with a double.

Hunter Bigge (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory for the Rays, who have won 13 of their past 14 games overall. Tampa Bay used four relievers to cover the final five innings after starter Griffin Jax tossed four innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out three.

The Rays improved to 25-12, while the Red Sox fell to 16-22. The game drew an announced crowd of 33,961 and lasted 2 hours, 48 minutes.

Boston starter Jake Bennett (1-1) took the loss after giving up six hits and four earned runs over 5 1/3 innings with one strikeout.

The teams traded three-run outbursts in the second inning before Tampa Bay seized control in the sixth.

Tampa Bay struck first in the top of the second. Ben Williamson singled home Jonny DeLuca, who had walked. Nick Fortes followed with a single, and Cedric Mullins dropped a bunt single to score Williamson. After Taylor Walls walked, Díaz lofted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Fortes. The Rays led 3-0.

Boston answered in the bottom half. Trevor Story singled, Masataka Yoshida walked and Ceddanne Rafaela singled to score Story. After a force out put runners at the corners, Connor Wong reached on a fielder’s choice that allowed Yoshida to score, with an error by shortstop Taylor Walls allowing Marcelo Mayer to advance to third. Caleb Durbin then singled home Mayer, tying the game at 3-3. Jarren Duran grounded into a double play to end the inning.

The score remained 3-3 until the sixth. Caminero led off with a single off Bennett, then Jonathan Aranda struck out. Jonny DeLuca singled to put runners at first and second. Ben Williamson walked to load the bases. Simpson, batting for Ryan Vilade, grounded a single up the middle off Bennett, scoring Caminero and DeLuca to give Tampa Bay a 5-3 lead.

Simpson continued his big night in the eighth. With one out, Williamson reached on a bunt single. Simpson then tripled to right-center field, scoring Williamson to make it 6-3. He was left stranded when Mullins popped out and Walls struck out.

The Red Sox cut into the deficit in the bottom of the eighth against Tampa Bay reliever Kevin Kelly. Duran led off with a double and advanced to third on a single by Willson Contreras, who was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Wilyer Abreu then lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Duran to make it 6-4.

Tampa Bay answered immediately in the ninth. Díaz led off with a ground-rule double, his fourth of the season. Hunter Feduccia sacrificed him to third. Caminero then crushed a line-drive homer to center field off Boston reliever Ryan Watson, scoring Díaz and pinch-runner Richie Palacios to cap the scoring at 8-4.

Caminero went 2 for 4 with the homer and two RBIs. Díaz finished 2 for 4 with a double, a sacrifice fly and his milestone hit. Mullins also drove in a run with his bunt single.

For Boston, Duran doubled and scored, and Contreras had two hits. The Red Sox managed only seven hits in the game.

Boston pitchers combined for seven strikeouts, 41 balls and seven balls in play. Watson worked three innings of relief, giving up five hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts. Tyler Samaniego pitched 2/3 of a scoreless inning.

The Rays grounded into two double plays, including one that wiped out a first-inning single by Vilade and another that erased Díaz in the fifth.

Tampa Bay’s winning streak matches its season high and has lifted the team to the top of the American League East standings. The Rays have won six consecutive games on the road.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, have lost four of their last five games at Fenway Park.

The game featured a key sequence in the sixth inning when Simpson delivered with the bases loaded. That at-bat turned the momentum decisively in Tampa Bay’s favor after Boston had rallied to tie the game in the second.

The Rays continue their four-game series at Fenway Park on Friday night. Boston will look to snap its three-game losing streak overall.
