Rangers ride Eovaldi to 6‑1 win over Yankees

NEW YORK (Interstat) — Nathan Eovaldi cooled off the New York Yankees for the second time in eight days, and the Texas Rangers backed him with early home runs from Corey Seager and Evan Carter in a 6-1 victory Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium II.

Eovaldi struck out eight and walked none over eight efficient innings, allowing three hits and one earned run. He threw 72 of his 101 pitches for strikes and retired 16 of the last 17 batters he faced after Aaron Judge’s solo homer in the sixth inning. The right-hander improved to 4-4 on the season and lowered his ERA to 3.12.

The Yankees had won five straight games and 15 of 17 entering the night, but right-hander Will Warren struggled. Warren (4-1) was tagged for six runs and seven hits over four innings, throwing 90 pitches. He walked three and struck out seven but yielded a pair of home runs that put Texas in control early.

The Rangers jumped ahead in the first inning when Seager launched a 1-0 fastball over the right-field wall for his seventh homer of the season. The solo shot gave Texas a 1-0 lead.

Texas added three runs in the third inning. Brandon Nimmo drew a leadoff walk, and Ezequiel Duran followed with a sharp double to left field that scored Nimmo. After Seager grounded out and Josh Jung struck out, Evan Carter crushed a two-run homer to right field, his fourth of the year, scoring Duran and pushing the lead to 4-0.

The Rangers extended the margin in the fourth inning. Jake Burger led off with a single, and after Alejandro Osuna flied out, Andrew McCutchen walked. Nimmo then walked to load the bases. Duran lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Burger. Seager followed with a single to right field that brought home McCutchen, making it 6-0.

New York’s only run came in the sixth inning when Judge led off with a 2-0 pitch that he drove to center field for his major league-leading 15th homer. It was the only damage against Eovaldi, who retired the next three batters in order and worked through the seventh and eighth innings without allowing a baserunner.

Yankees relievers Yerry De los Santos and Ryan Yarbrough combined for five scoreless innings. De los Santos threw 3 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. Yarbrough pitched 1 2/3 hitless innings with two strikeouts. But the Yankees offense managed just three hits overall, with Cody Bellinger and Austin Wells each collecting a single besides Judge’s homer.

Texas finished with eight hits. Seager went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. Burger went 2-for-4. Duran drove in two runs, including the sacrifice fly, and doubled. McCutchen singled and reached base twice. Nimmo walked three times.

Eovaldi’s performance marked his second strong outing against the Yankees in a span of eight days. On April 29, he pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out seven in a 3-0 win at Texas.

The Rangers improved to 17-19, while the Yankees fell to 25-12.

Jacob Latz pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Texas, striking out one and allowing no hits.

The announced attendance was 40,269, and the game lasted 2 hours, 46 minutes.

The two teams meet again Thursday in the series finale before Texas returns home to face the Chicago Cubs on Friday. The Yankees travel to Milwaukee on Friday for a three-game set.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Texas Rangers 3, New York Yankees 8. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Yankees a 63.50 percent probability to win. New York had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 7 went over the over-under line of 8.
