Rays blank the Blue Jays 3‑0 behind McClanahan’s scoreless streak

TAMPA (Interstat) — Shane McClanahan pitched seven innings of three-hit shutout ball and the Tampa Bay Rays completed a three-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays with a 3-0 victory Wednesday afternoon at George Steinbrenner Field.

McClanahan, who improved to 4-2, struck out five and walked one while allowing only four Toronto baserunners. He faced the minimum over the first three innings and worked out of his only jam in the seventh when the Blue Jays put two runners on with one out before a strikeout and a lineout ended the threat.

The Rays broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning against Toronto starter Patrick Corbin. Jonathan Aranda drew a one-out walk, and Jonny DeLuca followed with a sharp double to center field that scored Aranda. Chandler Simpson then singled to right field, plating DeLuca to give Tampa Bay a 2-0 lead.

Tampa Bay added an insurance run in the eighth, aided by a Toronto defensive miscue. With one out, Cedric Mullins singled off Corbin and moved to second on a groundout. The Blue Jays intentionally walked Aranda, and DeLuca grounded to second baseman Ernie Clement, whose throw to second base for a force out sailed into left field, allowing Mullins to score and DeLuca to reach first. Louis Varland, who had entered after the intentional walk, retired the next two batters to end the inning.

Toronto’s offense managed only four hits and never advanced a runner past second base. Kazuma Okamoto led off the game with a double to left, but McClanahan retired the next three hitters. Myles Straw doubled in the fifth inning but was left stranded. In the seventh, Daulton Varsho singled and Straw singled again, putting runners at first and second with two outs, but Yohendrick Piñango struck out swinging to end the inning.

Patrick Corbin (1-1) took the loss despite a solid outing. He allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings, walking three and striking out three. Varland worked one inning, allowing one hit – the Mullins single – but no earned runs. Ian Seymour earned his first save of the season, retiring the side in order in the ninth on a strikeout and two lineouts.

Tampa Bay improved to 24-12 with its fourth consecutive victory, while Toronto dropped to 16-21 and has lost four straight. The Rays outscored the Blue Jays 12-4 in the three-game series.

Key performers for Toronto included Varsho, who went 1 for 2, and Straw, who finished 2 for 3 with two doubles. Lenyn Sosa was 0 for 2, Ernie Clement 0 for 4, George Springer 0 for 4 and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 0 for 4 with a strikeout. For Tampa Bay, DeLuca delivered the pivotal double and scored a run, Simpson had two hits and an RBI, and Mullins scored the eighth-inning run.

The game, which drew an announced crowd of 11,275, took 2 hours, 12 minutes.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Tampa Bay Rays 7, Toronto Blue Jays 5. Tampa Bay had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total score of 3 went over the over/under line of 7.5.
