Massey, Collins homer as Royals beat Guardians 5‑3
KANSAS CITY (Interstat) — Michael Massey hit a go-ahead two-run homer, Isaac Collins also went deep and the Kansas City Royals extended their winning streak to five games with a 5-3 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium.
The Royals struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the Guardians surged ahead with a three-run fourth only to see Kansas City answer immediately. Massey’s blast in the bottom of the fourth put the Royals ahead for good, and Collins added a solo shot in the sixth to provide the final margin.
Stephen Kolek, making his season debut after a spring training oblique strain, allowed three runs on four hits over six innings while striking out three. The right-hander, who had pitched in four rehab starts at Triple-A Omaha, was called up for a spot start because Noah Cameron was dealing with lower back tightness. Kolek earned his first win of the season.
Gavin Williams took the loss for Cleveland, allowing five runs on eight hits over six innings. He struck out seven but gave up the critical homers to Massey and Collins.
Lucas Erceg worked around a two-out walk in the ninth inning to earn his third save in four games and his 10th save of the season. Nick Mears and Daniel Lynch IV each pitched a scoreless inning in relief for Kansas City.
The Guardians grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth, but the Royals had already taken a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Maikel Garcia walked to start the bottom of the first, and Bobby Witt Jr. followed with a double into the right-field corner that sent Garcia to third. Vinnie Pasquantino popped out, but Salvador Perez singled up the middle, scoring Garcia and Witt to make it 2-0.
Cleveland responded in the fourth against Kolek. Chase DeLauter singled sharply to left, and after Jose Ramirez grounded into a force play, Kyle Manzardo singled to center. Rhys Hoskins then drove a 1-1 pitch over the left-field wall for a three-run homer, his third of the season, giving the Guardians a 3-2 lead.
But the lead lasted only half an inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Jac Caglianone struck out, then Collins doubled off the right-field wall. Massey followed by belting a 2-2 pitch over the right-field fence, scoring Collins and putting Kansas City back in front 4-3.
The Royals added an insurance run in the sixth. After a groundout and a strikeout, Collins hit a solo homer to right-center field, his third of the year, extending the lead to 5-3.
Cleveland threatened in the ninth when Erceg issued a two-out walk to Hoskins, but Daniel Schneemann grounded out to second to end the game.
Collins finished 3 for 3 with a home run, a double and an RBI. Massey went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs. Witt had two hits, including a double.
For Cleveland, Hoskins drove in all three runs with his fourth-inning homer. Colin Holderman pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Guardians, striking out three.
The game lasted 2 hours, 6 minutes before an announced crowd of 13,102.
Kansas City improved to 17-19, while Cleveland fell to 18-19.
The two teams conclude the series with games Wednesday and Thursday before the Guardians return home for a six-game homestand against Minnesota and the Los Angeles Angels. The Royals host the Detroit Tigers for a three-game series starting Friday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Kansas City 6, Cleveland 3. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Cleveland with a 50.60 percent probability to win. Cleveland had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5.
