White Sox blank Angels behind Martin’s dominant outing
ANAHEIM, Calif. (Interstat) — Munetaka Murakami hit his 14th home run and Miguel Vargas also went deep as the Chicago White Sox blanked the Los Angeles Angels 6-0 on Monday night at Angel Stadium.
Murakami’s two-run blast in the fourth inning kept the rookie first baseman tied with New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge for the major league lead in homers. Murakami finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, adding his first double of the season in the sixth and a single in the eighth.
Davis Martin allowed five hits in seven shutout innings, striking out 10 without issuing a walk. The right-hander improved his record to 5-1 and lowered his ERA to 1.64. Martin escaped his only jam in the seventh, getting Josh Lowe to fly out to deep center with runners on first and third.
The White Sox (17-18) jumped on Angels starter José Soriano early. Sam Antonacci walked to lead off the game and Murakami drew a walk. After two strikeouts, Chase Meidroth lined a single to center that scored Antonacci, and Andrew Benintendi followed with a ground-ball single to center that brought home Murakami for a 2-0 lead.
Chicago added three more runs in the fourth. Antonacci led off with a single, and Murakami crushed a 1-0 pitch from Soriano over the center-field wall. Vargas then hit the next pitch over the right-center-field fence for his seventh homer of the season, making it 5-0.
The White Sox tacked on an insurance run in the eighth. Murakami singled, went to third on a single by Vargas and scored on a single by Colson Montgomery.
Martin set down the first nine Angels hitters before Travis d’Arnaud singled with one out in the third. Adam Frazier grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Los Angeles (13-23) managed only five hits. Nolan Schanuel doubled twice, in the fourth and seventh innings, but the Angels could not push a run across. Martin struck out the side in the fifth and worked around a single and a double in the seventh.
Sean Newcomb pitched two perfect innings of relief, striking out four to close the game. The White Sox hitters pounded out 16 hits, four from Benintendi and three each from Murakami, Jarred Kelenic and Antonacci.
Soriano took the loss, allowing five earned runs on eight hits in four innings with five strikeouts and two walks. Mitch Farris gave up one earned run in four innings of relief, striking out three. Brent Suter pitched a scoreless inning.
The game was completed in 2 hours, 18 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 26,262.
The White Sox won for the fourth time in five games. They had lost 3-0 to the Padres on Sunday before Monday’s victory. The Angels have lost six of their last eight.
Chicago continues its three-game series at Anaheim on Tuesday. Left-hander Garrett Crochet is scheduled to start for the White Sox against Angels right-hander Jack Kochanowicz.
The most important sequence of the game came in the top of the fourth inning with the White Sox leading 2-0. After Antonacci singled, Murakami connected for his two-run homer, and Vargas followed with a solo shot on the next pitch. The back-to-back homers extended the lead to 5-0 and effectively put the game out of reach against an Angels offense that had been held scoreless in the first three innings. The outburst also chased Soriano after four innings, forcing the Angels bullpen to cover five frames.
The top star for the White Sox was Martin, who continued his dominant stretch. He also defeated the Angels on April 28, throwing 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball in a 5-2 Chicago victory. On April 23, he beat the Diamondbacks with six innings of one-run work. Martin has now won four consecutive decisions.
White Sox left fielder Sam Antonacci reached base three times, walking and singling twice, and scored twice. Benintendi, the designated hitter, drove in a run with his four-hit night.
The Angels had only two at-bats with runners in scoring position and failed to deliver. Zach Neto struck out three times, and Mike Trout went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Chicago White Sox 6, Los Angeles Angels 2. Interstat’s ELO system had given the Angels a 52.20 percent probability to win. Los Angeles had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -1.5. The total score of 6 went over the over/under line of 7.5.
